Title: Siblings' Rivalries
Fandom: The Silmarillion
Prompt: Upstage
Warnings: N/A
Rating: K
Summary: Caranthir wishes Curufin would stop upstaging the rest of them. Maedhros and Maglor have little sympathy.

“He always upstages the rest of us,” Caranthir said, looking out the window at where Curufin walked with their father. “I know he’s the most like Atar, but it’d be nice if anybody paid attention to what the rest of us can do for once.”

Maglor looked up. “That’s what always happens. You’re the top of their attention, then the next child is born and poof, all attention is gone in favor of their accomplishments.”

“Yes, and I still have you beat in the number of times I’ve been upstaged,” Maedhros said.

“Well, yes, that’s how being the oldest works. Do you need me to explain it to you?” Maglor smirked, laughing when Maedhros threw a pillow at him.

“If it bothers you that much, just ask Atar to spend more time with you. There’s not point waiting for him to realize what he’s doing. He’s a genius, but he gets so involved in what is happening in front of him that he forgets what we’re doing,” Maedhros said. “Or you can do like Maglor here did and find a loud hobby that demands attention.”

“It’s not that loud,” Maglor answered.

“It’s not that loud now,” Maedhros corrected his brother. “When you first started playing the harp you managed to make it sound like a panicking cow, even though a harp and a cow sound nothing alike.”

Maglor rolled his eyes. “Or you can do what Celegorm did and go find a Vala you like who can teach you something. Just stay away from Manwë or Námo.”

“I don’t want to spend time with any of the Valar. I don’t know how Celegorm stands it all day wandering the forest, listening to animals chatter on about whatever they do,” Caranthir said.

Maglor shrugged. “To hear Celegorm talk, their conversations are more interesting than what you overhear in the city.”

“But is that the truth, or just Celegorm loving random animals far more than he likes anyone in the city that is not part of our family, and quite possibly more than he loves us?” Caranthir looked back out the window, where his father was now instructing Curufin in how to work silver.

Maedhros shrugged that time. “Who knows? Unless one of us wants to spend the time learning how to understand animals, we can’t judge their conversations except through what he tells us.”

“When he tells us anything,” Maglor said. “He hasn’t even come back to the house in a month. At this rate, none of us will recognize him when he comes back.”

Maedhros shook his head. “I doubt he’ll stay away long enough for us to forget what he looks like.”

“Who says I haven’t already forgotten what he looks like?” Caranthir grinned. “There’s too many blondes I have to remember, he just blends in with the rest of them.”

“Please don’t let him hear you say that,” Maglor said. “I don’t want to hear another three hour rant about how much better he is than our cousins.”

“Can I tell him that their hair upstages his?”

“Absolutely not.”
