Title: Everything
Author: Chosenfire
Disclaimer: I DO NOT OWN. All recognizable characters and situations belong to their respective owners and I make no profit off of playing with them.
Fandom: Heroes
Rating: PG-13
Word Count: 1,000+
Characters: Nathan, Peter, Simon, Monty, and Heidi
Warnings: none
Prompt: #145 - Imbroglio
Spoilers: Heroes preseries
Summary: Nathan was raised to behave a certain way, it was Peter who taught him how to be himself, and how to love.
Author’s Notes: I am still reeling from the finale, so this is very Nathan centered and on the way he views his brother; the boys are in it but the focus is on how Peter has affected Nathan’s life. The song used is cheesy, but sometimes it’s the things that are overused that ring the truest. Enjoy and please leave feedback. Beta’s by
lightthesparks. Prompt refers to how complicated and tangled up Nathan’s relationship is with Peter.
Did you ever know that you're my hero,
and everything I would like to be?
From birth, he had been groomed to behave a certain way. He had been taught how to act, how to speak, even how to smile. From the second he had entered this world expectations had been placed on him, to make his parents proud, to live up to the family name.
He had worked hard and he had done everything that was expected of him. He had known better than to ask for anything for himself. He didn’t talk back. He was the perfect son. So when a small bundle had been placed in his arms, he hadn’t known what to do. Heck, most days he still didn’t know what to do when handling Peter.
Peter, who refused to be what their parents wanted him to be.
Peter, who ran around and got dirty. Who told them no. Who blew them off. Who had such a passion for what he wanted his life to be and didn’t let anything get in his way. Peter, who since the day he was born had been Nathan’s. He had been told to look after him, to watch over him, to help him, he had all but been told to raise him and he had.
No wonder Peter told their parents no, they hadn’t been the ones to raise him. But Nathan had and he rarely told Nathan no. Whenever he asked Peter was there for him, supporting him, helping him, taking his mind off all the responsibilities that had been laid on him.
When he had become a father and lost a child all in the same year Peter was the only one that had known.
When Nathan got married Peter was his best man.
When he cheated on his wife of only 3 months it was Peter he had called.
When Simon was born Peter was right there with him, third to hold Nathan’s son, and the look they had shared had assured Nathan that Simon would never have to live the life he had. That even if he couldn’t be a good father Peter would be an amazing uncle and that his children would only be expected to be themselves, they would learn from his brother how to tell the world screw you and do what made them happy.
When Monty had been born two months premature it had been Peter that had sat with him. He had brought them fresh clothes each day, coffee, food; he had brought comfort. After a week of waiting for news that their baby boy would be okay, it had been Peter who had finally talked Heidi into going home for a few hours and getting a shower and some sleep, he had reminded her of the other boy they had that really needed his mommy. He had done this while he had been the one watching Simon, playing with him, reassuring him, making sure he got to bed each night after talking to his parents on the phone.
Simon had finally been allowed to come home after a few more weeks and Peter had been there. Heidi had often joked that when she had married Nathan she had really gotten two husbands. They laughed, but in a way it was true. No wonder Peter had become a nurse, it was in his nature to take care of everyone. Nathan had raised Peter and now Peter was raising him.
Heidi had gone to meet their mother for brunch, a weekly ritual that she often complained about, but he could tell she was pleased that his mother had accepted her. He had married her because he loved her, she was the woman his parents approved of, the woman his father had wanted him to marry and he didn’t regret it, not one bit.
Usually, when she went to brunch Nathan would take that time to catch up on some work in his office. Being that while she was out Peter would come over after his shift to play with the boys, he had never believed in letting someone else care for them, both him and Heidi had banded together to make sure that neither of them would be raised by nannies, like Nathan was.
Work could wait though; all he did lately was work. He knew what the goal was, knew the future he was working towards, but sometimes the weight of that future got too much. He couldn’t let go of it like Peter had, but maybe he could push it aside for a bit.
The sight that greeted him when he walked into the boys’ room curved the hard line of his lips. Peter was on the floor with Monty perched precariously on his back and Simon running into his side toppling them over. Still, Peter managed to shift his body so that he fell onto the thick carpet with Monty wriggling in his arms.
“It’s good to see you acting your age for once, Pete.” Nathan drawled from the doorway, his coat and tie in the office and the top two buttons of his white shirt undone.
Peter glanced up at him a wide grin breaking across his face and he scrambled up with Monty breaking free of his arms to run towards Nathan, his older brother right behind him.
Nathan greeted both his boys with tight hugs, holding them close and breathing them in, taking comfort in the fact that they were happy, that they didn’t hold themselves back. He would never have run to his father for a hug, and Peter had given up quickly growing up, but his boys didn’t have to stop themselves. Hugs were free, love, affection, basic human contact, those were the things he had learned from his brother and that he was passing on to his sons.
“Yeah, well, he can’t all be old and boring like you, Nathan.” Peter’s smile was playful and when the boys drew back his brother moved forward for a quick hug, close and hard, because they didn’t have to hold back.
Peter had taught Nathan a lot of things, one of them being that love didn’t come with a price tag, it wasn’t built on expectations, and it shouldn’t have conditions.
