Title: The Thunder Princess
Fandom: Original
Prompt: Malevolence
Warnings: none.
Rating: PG 13
Summary: The Thunder Princess is a pirate, and all pirates have to meet their death at some point, don’t they?
She wasn’t going to be able to escape in time.
Cursing, she kicked at the piles of bleached bones around her feet, calling that traitor every foul word she could think of, may he rot in the sun’s unfeeling glare. She pulled at the iron shackle binding her and screamed out her rage to the empty forest.
Their map had led them right to the treasure, just where she knew that wily old pirate had hidden it. Her ancestor, her map, her ship, her crew. More curses flew through the air as she picked up a bone and began slamming it into everything within reach. One of her own had betrayed her, taken her treasure, and left her here to die.
When she got out of here, she was going to tear him into pieces, using her bare hands. Then she sighed. She wasn’t getting out of this one. This is where the story of The Thunder Princess ended. With betrayal.
She threw herself to the ground and fumed. She was shackled in a trap on a deserted island. There was no hope, even if she did somehow manage to get free of the irons. Ships simply didn’t come here. She was abandoned.
The day was steadily becoming hotter as the sun inched through the sky. Without water, how long did she have before it killed her, taking her soul into its keeping? She put her arm over her eyes and tried to rest. She hadn’t closed her eyes for more than a moment before something rustling in the nearby brush had her sitting up with a start.
She reached for the old bleached bone as her dark eyes searched the thick brush surrounding her prison. For a moment there was nothing to be found, then suddenly there it was, a massive cat, all black fur and yellow eyes. Her lips thinned in anticipation. If the cat was hungry, she probably looked like a mighty tasty dinner. Sweat made her grip on the bone loose and she had to force herself to take deep breaths to calm herself, readying herself for its attack.
But it never came. The cat stared at her, unblinking and unnerving. Something flashed in its eyes and its ears twitched. She felt the tension leave her shoulders when the beast looked away, turning its back on her. It didn’t leave, instead laying in the sun, its back toward her still.
Frowning in confusion, The Thunder Princess stared at the bewildering creature. It began to bath itself with its tongue. Laughing softly to herself, she tossed the bone to the ground and leaned back, folding her arms behind her head. Maybe if the cat decided to attack it would be a good idea. It would go for her neck first, strangling her, razor sharp teeth cutting flesh as easy as a ships bow cuts waves.
It would be better than dying from thirst. More story worthy. Worthy of her family.
She couldn’t hold back a smile as she thought of her family. Men of the sea, they had always been. Pirates for as far back as they had records. Albeit it was only six generations. And one of her ancestors had even been a famous rogue. Captain Thunder, he was.
She had always fancied herself his equal, despite not being half as popular as her great-great grandfather.
The cat moved and she slid her eyes toward it. It had twisted and was chewing at a bit of skin on its back. Its eyes opened and looked up at her, letting her know that it was still watching her. She didn’t react, but forced her body to relax even more. She wasn’t a threat to the cat, so she wouldn’t provoke it anymore than she had to.
Who knew how playful the cat would be with its kill?
She sighed and looked up at the clear sky, wishing for something to happen. If the sun, or thirst didn’t kill her, the boredom would. She hated being idle. She hated not being at the helm of her ship, causing havoc and mayhem.
Her forbearers wouldn’t have suffered this. Captain Thunder hadn’t died whiling his time away in the cruel sun. He’d died fighting, like a true pirate. Like a warrior of ancient tales. She sighed again and was echoed by the cat’s yawn.
She sat up, only then realizing that the cat had moved closer to her. It was still ignoring her, but had rolled around, its head all that much closer. She eyed the irons holding her and wondered how far away they would let her get from the giant black beast. A toy on a rope, that’s all she was. She scowled and wished many a malevolent things upon her traitorous first mate.
If she were to be cat food, then she was going to haunt him for all his days. He’d never have another peaceful moment in his life. She vowed it.
Then a blast shook the air, making her and the cat jump in surprise. Birds took to the air, filling the sky and crying out their displeasure. The Thunder Princess looked up, wishing that the trees were thinner so she could see beyond them.
Had another ship arrived? Had her crew set upon them like the dogs they were? Or were they being attacked?
Chafing at the bit, The Thunder Princess gathered her feet under her and stood as another blast shook the ground. That one had been closer. She searched the area, seeking something of human life. Surely that had caused an explosion of land, if not a fire. There was nothing, but then she didn’t have time to pursue that.
The cat had moved. She screamed her best pirate’s yell as it leaped toward her. Why hadn’t it run for safety when the ground shook? Why was it attacking her now. She held up the bleached bone for its feeble protection from those frightening teeth, but it was all for naught.
The cat landed at her feet, and begun digging, kicking up dirt willy nilly.
She blinked stupidly at it.
“Help me,” a man’s voice said to her, “we’ve no time to waste. This may be our only chance.”
She spun about, seeking the speaker, but they were still alone save for the birds in the sky and the blasts from the sea.
“Dig, woman, or are you that useless?”
It was the cat! The cat was talking to her! She gaped at it a moment before her eyes turned to the post holding her captive. The cat was digging it out of the ground!
A surge of excitement rushed through her as she dropped to her knees and begun digging. She’d think more upon the beast’s ability to speak, but for now she had to escape. And make it to the ship before one of them sank and the other left, leaving her to die.
