A/N: Um. Saw HBP... came out with the absolute conviction that Draco/Luna would work really, really well. Hence... this.
After the funeral, the students returned to their dormitories in solemn silence to pack their belongings and wait for the carriages that would take them to the train. Some wept, others talked in low whispers, wondering what would happen now, others waited in silence.
Draco needed to get out. Ever since… what had happened, he’d been surrounded by people, teachers, other students, even people from the Ministry, all asking him what happened, and how. He could feel the pressure building up, until finally he couldn’t take any more and slipped away, heading out into the grounds, walking until he found a place to sit where it was quiet.
He was doing just that when he heard a soft voice behind him. “I’d be careful about sitting here, you know. You might get left behind, and it’s a long way to London.”
Draco turned to see the Lovegood girl, the one who hung around with Potter, standing nearby with a pleasant, if somewhat vacant, expression. “What are you doing here?” he snarled.
“I thought it would be good to go for a walk. It’s all very intense at the castle. Not a healthy atmosphere at all.”
“Whatever.” When she didn’t move, he frowned. “Well, what are you waiting for? Go for your walk, just leave me alone.”
She shrugged. “I don’t think so. I like this spot, I think I’ll stay here.” She sat down on the grass near him. “Luna, by the way. I don’t think we’ve been properly introduced, but I know who you are, of course.”
“I know who you are. You’re one of Potter’s friends. Weren’t you in that little army of his last year?”
“Yes.”
“None of Potter’s lot want to be anywhere near me. Why are you still here?”
“Curiosity. You don’t seem quite like people say you are.” She smiled at him, seeing his expression. “If you’re thinking that I’m crazy, it’s all right. Everyone does.”
“Don’t you have friends?”
“I suppose I do. It’s nice having friends. But I don’t mind being on my own, either.”
“Oh.”
“You like being on your own, don’t you?”
“Right now, yes.”
“That’s not a good idea. At times like this you need people with you.”
“I don’t want people with me.”
“It’s not about what you want. It’s what you need.”
“Who are you, my therapist?”
“If you’d like.”
They sat in silence for a while, Luna looking out at the countryside, Draco mostly looking down at the ground and trying to avoid her gaze. Eventually he sighed. Without looking at her, he said “I’ve heard people call you Loony.”
“I know. I don’t mind.”
“I’d mind. If I had a nickname like that…”
“Then it’s good that you don’t.”
“…who knows what they’ll be calling me now. Half of them… half the school thinks I did it, killed… him. And the… You-Know-Who’s side, they’ll think I’m a coward. That’s all anyone will think about me now.”
Luna reached out and patted his hand gently. “I don’t.”
He snorted. “You’re… different.”
She smiled, and said, “I like you.”
“No-one likes me. My own family don’t like me.”
“Perhaps that’s your problem. Why you don’t want to be around people.”
He shrugged. “Maybe.”
Luna looks around once more, and starts to stand up. Draco catches her hand. “Don’t. What are you doing?”
“Heading back. They’ll be wondering where we are.”
“Oh. Then… I’ll walk with you. If that’s all right.”
“Of course.”
He got to his feet and they started the walk back to the castle together, where they arrived to find that the other students were already getting into the carriages that would carry them to the train. Most had already departed, and as they were at the back of the queue they ended up in one of the last carriages.
Sitting in their carriage as it started to move, Draco glanced at Luna, and realised that maybe the world he’d found himself in wasn’t as cold and friendless as he’d imagined.
