Title: Finally
Fandom: Original
Prompt: Antapology

Rating: G
Summary: Rurik finds his way back to Saya’s side.
He reached for her and Saya all but leaped into his arms. He stumbled back a step and readjusted his hold to a more secure embrace. His heart fluttered rapidly, taking his breath away, and his mouth went dry. Before he could react, Saya was pulling away and grinning up at him with eyes shinning with tears.
“I’m so happy you’re here and alive!”
“Why wouldn’t I be?”
Saya flushed and he almost touched a hand to her hair, peaking out from under a worn helmet, caked with mud and dusted with some sort of powder. She wouldn’t meet his eyes and her fingers tightened on his jacket.
“I-I thought I had gotten you killed out there.” She waved her hand, indicating the battlefield they had left behind. Overcoming his shyness, Rurik pulled her back into his arms, tightening them around her in a way he rarely allowed himself.
“You didn’t do anything.”
She pulled away again, staring up at him. “I didn’t. I didn’t. That’s the worst. I c-could- should have done something. I should have.” Her hands tightened even more, enough to cause him to wince in pain. “What happened to you?”
Her eyes were beautiful, full of tears and glittering like jewels in the light filtering through the tree’s canopy. He had to swallow before his voice would obey him.
“We got separated, that’s all. I went into a foxhole and lost sight of you in the fog. Bombs were going off everywhere.”
Then she was in his arms again, sobbing in his chest. He had to fight to keep the stupidly happy smile off his face. This was serious, they were in danger here, and she was clearly upset. More upset than he had ever seen her.
“It’s all my fault.”
“It isn’t. Merlin warned us about what would happen out here. We both knew the dangers.”
“We were supposed to stay together. Together, and the first thing I do is go and get lost.”
He passed a hand through her hair and wondered about the helmet. Where had she gotten it? Had she met someone here?
She pulled away from him to wipe at her eyes with the back of her hand, smearing more mud over her face. She was adorable.
Then he realized that he was holding her just as tight as she was holding him.
He knew she was powerful, and she had great magic at her disposal, but that still hadn’t stopped him from fretting over her wellbeing, just as she had apparently fretted over his. He hadn’t feared for her life, he didn’t think anything could kill her, but he had still worried. His hands were shaking as he listened to her trying to muffle her sobs.
“I’m so sorry,” she said. “I know I’m reckless, but I never meant to put you into this type of danger. Never in a million years. I’m so sorry.”
He’d never heard her cry like this before, never over him. His heart felt like it was breaking. She looked up at him, face red and tears making even more of a mess of the mud and he thought she still looked beautiful.
He reached out before he could think better of it, and held her face in his hands. He kissed her, pressing their lips together and probably making a fool of himself, but he wouldn’t hold back any longer.
She blinked up at him, eyes wide and startled before he felt her smile against his lips and settle into his arms, eyes slipping closed. When he pulled away finally, she opened her eyes slowly and idly picked at the cloth over his shoulder.
“I didn’t expect that response.”
He flushed red and his shyness returned in full force.
