Sam stood in front of the mirror his eyes locked on the thin scar near his elbow. He had just gotten out of the shower and had been about to pull on a shirt when it caught his eye, it didn’t stand out, but he knew where to look. It had faded over time and flattened, but it was still there.

“Okay man, narcissistic much, want to spend some time alone with yourself. I can get another room.” Dean’s voice broke through his thoughts and he meet his brother’s amused eyes in the mirror. The teasing was said in the same voice, the same tone Sam had heard for years but it was more guarded now, cautious in a way Dean had never been around him.

Dean was always so careful around him now. At first Sam had thought it as because he didn’t trust him, and he had deserved that, he had lost Dean’s trust when he chosen to believe the lies Ruby had told him. He had thought it could be something he could work through, now that they were back together he had vowed to win his brother’s trust back.

But he was beginning to feel that wasn’t it. Dean trusted him, maybe not as much as he once had, it wasn’t a blind trust anymore. But Dean still believed in him, he trusted him enough now to have his back, he didn’t hesitate to throw himself into danger and trust that Sam would be there to get him out or back him up.

No, it was something else. Dean was careful around him, and it wasn’t a lack of trust.

Dean has holding back from him, he had pulled away and Sam wasn’t sure he could find a way around the walls that suddenly surrounded him. Dean had never been closed off from him, and he had taken that for granted, he had never expected his brother to close himself off this way.

It was like Dean was watching him all the time, waiting for him to mess up again, waiting him to walk away again. It felt like Dean had given up and him and Sam didn’t want that, because he wasn’t ever going to give up on Dean. He needed his big brother, Dean was all he had left and he didn’t want to lose him again.

“I remember how I got this,” Sam’s voice was soft but Dean was listening, haven moved closer to stand behind Sam “I was eight, it was at the playground in Freedom, Ohio. We were just there for the summer.”

“The playground was just around the block, you wanted to go everyday.” Dean interrupted, his eyes tracing the scar before moving back to Sam’s “Some punk pushed you off the swing, idiots put it in concrete and you hit hard. I saw the blood and panicked.”

“You only hit him once, he was so scared I’m pretty sure he pissed his pants.”

“Yeah well no one messed with my kid brother.” Dean’s voice was rougher but a smile twisted his lips.

Sam smiled back dropping his arm “Yeah, same here. I’m not going to let anyone mess with you Dean.” Sam knew it could hurt whatever progress he had made with his brother, because while looking back he had seen Dean’s walls drop a little bit. He couldn’t help it though. He needed Dean to know that he was there too, that he was strong enough to save his brother now too.

The smirk twisting Dean’s lips wasn’t at full strength, and the word’s were soft but Sam still heard them as Dean nodded squeezing his shoulder briefly “Damn straight.”

It was a start.
