Summary: Billie and ther two companions meet their new bosses.

Billie wiped her brow with the heavy cloth of her shirt as she watched in silence as Chili read the paper the stranger had handed him. They had finally arrived at their destination to find the strangest building they had ever seen.
It was built half underground, in the Western style, with wooden walls and a hard slanted roof. It also all but glowed in the sun’s light, made of the same metal of her knife. She thought. She felt the stupid urge to reach out and touch the metal. She stayed that urge and kept herself behind Soda.
Tiny windows peeked out from the ground and were framed with brightly colored curtains. The area behind the door when it was opened showed a lighted room with soft rugs on the floor and portraits on the walls behind glass.
That was odd, she thought and shot her eyes to the man who had greeted them.
He was tall, short red hair and soft brown eyes. He had peered at them through wary eyes when he had first opened the door, but stepped out and smiled when Chili showed him the summons that had brought them across the width of the world.
He took the letter and pulled out another one from a pocket at the front of his shirt. His clothing was as unusual as his home. He wore leggings of a strange blue cloth and shoes that looked so different than anything she had ever seen. He also held himself in a strange way, so differently from what she was used to.
He was proud, she thought. Such a strange thing to find outside of noble families. Where did he get his pride?
Soda shifted on his feet before her, breaking her etic survey of their new boss. She glanced at Soda and then followed his gaze to see a face peering out of one of the windows. Another man, this one of Asian decent, like Soda. He was watching them with avid curiosity, dark eyes switching between the four of them. They rested on Billie a moment and she dared a smile in his direction. He was cute, short and chubby and reminding her of a child. He returned the smile and his eyes twinkled.
Finally, Chili nodded and passed the letter to Soda. Billie peered over his shoulder. “Why the second letter?”
“To prove they are the ones that wrote the first.”
She nodded, not really understanding. The man invited them in with his odd accent and bright smile.
The inside of the house was even more startling than she expected. Wooden stairs led down into a wide room, cozy with thick rugs and plush couches in strange design. There were pictures of landscapes and people so well rendered that Soda paused to gape at the images protected behind glass.
The second man appeared, a bit breathless, and paused in sudden shyness at the room’s entrance. He lifted one hand in a hesitant wave before looking at his companion.
The red haired man nodded and waved the other into the room. “Everybody sit, we’ve a long story to tell you and you’re not going to believe a word of it.”
They all sat and Chili spoke, “Shall we start then?”
He smiled. “My name’s Richard Dark. This is Tommy Tai. We’re from the United States of America.”
They all three frowned. “What’s that,” Billie finally asked after a long pause.
Richard smiled, “That’s where my story begins.”
