Title: Being Human
Prompt: Emerge
Rating: PG
Fandom: DayBreaker
Warnings: None

Elvis walked out into the sunlight, scanning the horizon for the tell tail sign of day driving humvees driving down the dirt road towards the old mill they’d been hiding out in. He bit into an apple and shifted his crossbow to the other shoulder. Twisted his neck to this neck to the side he heard a soft pop and decided it was time to go on in.

He walked past the entrance and into the well lit top room. They’d poked holes in the ceilings to make sure if any damn vampire wanted in, they’d have to be wearing no less than a full on suit. Mother fuckers weren’t take them down easy.

He made his way into the living room were Audrey and Edward were sleeping on separate couches. Won’t be long before they were sharing a bedroom up stairs, but it wasn’t his place to say anything. Their emerging romance was none of his business.  Even if he had been here first and had fancied a place in the lady’s eye.  He won’t bother her about it, she was a big girl, knew what she wanted.

His fingers gently pushed a hair out of her face and he gave a little smirk. She was a beauty alright, but he was getting old. His hands compared to her skin were wrinkled and weathered. He knew each new wrinkle and saw in horror as the signs of age had caught up with him. This was why it was easier to be a vampire. He hadn’t exactly been young when he’d been shifted, but he’d stayed the same general look for the whole time. Now, he was facing mortality again and it wasn’t pretty.

He made his way out back to check the southern part of the house. He walked outside and straight into the dessert sun. He bathed in, remembering the good humanity could bring. The taste of food, having children, breathing, it was all so new to him again. There were things you didn’t miss though, shitting he could do without.

“Elvis?” a voice said softly from behind him, soft and feminine, had to be Audrey.

“Yeah?” he asked gruffly turning only his head to look at her.

“What are you doing?” she asked stepping out into the sun and next to him.

“Getting a tan,” he said with one of his half smiles and tilted his face upwards. It felt warm and welcoming on his skin and it gave him a reason to close his eyes.

“I get worried when you prowl around when I sleep. I start thinking you’re getting those vampire instincts back,” she teased and he glared over at her.

“Now, listen young lady, I’m perfectly able to control myself when needed. I haven’t wanted or needed a drop of blood in a long time. I plan on keeping it that way,” Elvis told her firmly, “I’d be more worried about Edward than me.”

“I prefer worrying about you,” Aubrey said leaning over and kissing his cheek, “Go sleep, Elvis, I got watch.”

“Yes, mam,” he said trying to read her face but getting nothing out of it. He turned back to the house doing his best not to read into her comment.
