Summary: Adam and Delphine are invited to his family reunion.
"Why?"
"Oh, it's to keep the animals calm." Adam wagged his eyebrows ridiculously. "You know how much trouble guys can be. And they get fat easier. Good for meat plants and all, you know?"
Delphine made a face. "Not that, idiot," she said muttered, turning around. "Why did your uncle want to adopt one?"
"He thinks they're cuddly."
That was, certainly, not what she was expecting. Adam laughed at her expression.
"I don't understand it either," he said. "But just go along with it, would you? It's not worth the trouble to question him anymore."
"I'm not questioning him. I'm just curious."
"We all are." Adam laughed again, grinning at the thought of his uncle. "Just accept him and all of his... eccentricities."
"That's an awfully polite way to put it."
Adam shrugged. "I might as well be nice to him, right? There's no point in being mean if he isn't here to feel bad about himself."
"I will never understand the way you guys think," Delphine lamented, leaning back on the bench to watch the sky above the park. "Anyway—why did you tell me, anyway? Are we going to visit?"
"Not that I know of."
"Then what on earth did you mention it for?"
He rolled his eyes. "It's just something interesting to mention. I thought you'd be amused."
"It's not like you to just randomly say something like that, you know." Delphine glanced at him, examining his features carefully. "What's up, Adam?"
He sighed. "My family's having a reunion in June. Mom and dad keep telling me to bring you over."
"We're not dating."
"I know—I know, Delphy. I keep trying to tell my parents that. They don't listen," said Adam, not flinching away from her gaze, "or they don't care. You can come as just a friend, you know."
"They're never going to believe it and you know that." Delphine gave Adam one last, lingering look and swept her eyes away. "Bring David. Or Steve."
Adam scowled mockingly, giving Delphine an affronted look that she didn't believe in the slightest. "They're going to think I'm gay," he complained. "As nice as some gay people are, I'm not one of them."
Delphine didn't respond, giving the scenery in front of her the same contemplative gaze that she had fixed Adam with earlier.
"Delphy," Adam said pleadingly. "It'll be fun. You love seeing my baby cousins, remember? They're bigger now, just as cute and with double the fun. And the energy."
She didn't look up.
"Don't worry. I'll tell everyone beforehand that we're not together, okay? Just ignore them—my uncle probably won't listen to anything I say, but that's him anyway, and you're better than that anyway. Relax. It'll be fun."
Nothing. Adam waited, on tenterhooks, and didn't say anything—better if he didn't say anything yet.
Finally, Delphine looked up. Her expression hadn't changed, eyes locked in that same endless gaze as before. There was something different about her, something resolute and something quietly fierce.
"Okay."
"Okay?" Adam perked up, smiling instantly. "Are you sure? We'll be gone for two weeks or so—new family house near D.C., so naturally everyone wants to stick around and play."
"Cool."
"Yeah," he agreed. "You're sure? You don't have to, you know..."
"Are you trying to dissuade me?" Delphine raised an eyebrow, and smiled at Adam's panicked expression. "Come on, Adam. You said you wanted to see a movie, right?"
"A movie?"
"A movie," Delphine repeated. "Come on. If your family's going to say that we're dating, we might as well go ahead and do it, right?"
