Brennan remembers the first gift Jeremy ever gave him. In fact, he still has it. He keeps it locked in a little wooden box along with all other parts of his childhood that he received from Jeremy. All he has to do is look at one of the items and it’s almost like he’s a kid again, which isn’t always very pleasant.
He has the ticket stub from the very first baseball game they went to. Brennan remembers the day being perfect for baseball. His mom dropped them off at the stadium, but didn’t go to the game with them because Jeremy insisted on it being a boy’s only day. Brennan remembers how happy he was that it was just going to be him and his brother. It had been a while since they had done anything together since Jeremy was so busy with high school things and Brennan was still in elementary school, but Jeremy had taken the time to plan out the entire day for them to spend together. They cheered for the Marlins, ate hot dogs and ice cream, and it was still a good day even though they lost.
Brennan also remembers the feel of his brother’s hand, holding tight and pulling him close through the crowd. It was nice, being that young and not worrying about what other kids might think if they saw him holding hands with his brother.
Kept underneath the ticket is a worn and faded playing card. When Brennan was twelve he wandered into Jeremy’s room while he and his friends were playing blackjack. When Jeremy had looked at him Brennan promised to keep his mouth shut and not touch anything. He didn’t make any noise until Jeremy and his friends all left to go somewhere else and he had gone back to his own room to tuck the stolen Joker inside with the ticket. He had felt particularly triumphant after that and then spent the next hour singing along with The Misfits.
His least favorite memory probably comes from the poker chip. Jeremy had promised to spend the spring break after his twenty first birthday in Miami, with Brennan. Instead Brennan got a call the day before Jeremy was supposed to arrive telling him that the plan had changed; Jeremy was going to spend the week in Vegas instead. Brennan didn’t reply, merely handed the phone back to his mother and went and packed his bag. He stayed at Finn’s house until his mother called and asked him to come home. When he had gotten there Jeremy was sitting on the porch. He told Brennan that he had stopped by to give him something before he caught his flight back to California; a green and white poker chip.
Brennan didn’t ever thank him for that gift, not even years later when Brennan realized that Jeremy had never meant to hurt him.
But his favorite gift will always be the first one Jeremy ever gave him. It was his sixth birthday and the first time he was going to meet his mom’s fiancée and his son. His mom invited them over for his birthday dinner and Brennan couldn’t look or talk to Jeremy, no matter how hard his mom tried to get him to. That changed after dessert however, when Jeremy sat him down and handed him an awkwardly wrapped and heavy gift. Brennan had stared at it as if it would bite him while Jeremy just watched him.
As soon as Brennan had begun unwrapping it, Jeremy had begun talking. While he rambled on about being too old to play with them and not really needing them anymore, Brennan found a tin filled with cat’s eye marbles of all different colors. That was the first time he surprised Jeremy; when he had jumped at him and wrapped his arms around Jeremy’s waist. He eventually lost most of the marbles over the years, except for his five favorite that he kept in the little wooden box.
And now that he thinks about, Brennan never thanked Jeremy for that gift either.
