Summary: Curiosity killed the cat, but…
Rurik glanced in her direction, looked away, then immediately returned his gaze to her as she entered the great hall. Saya bit her lip, feeling a flush coming to her cheeks as she felt more than just Rurik’s gaze on her. She didn’t act like a lady, ever, and everybody knew it. So they all stared at the bewitching young lady before them, agog.
Then she swore she could feel a gentle sigh of understanding take the room when the Lord’s wife descended behind her and gently nudged her into the hall. Saya glared at anybody who dared to meet her eye. Which was Merlin with laughter, and Rurik with befuddlement. She made her glare darker for him.
The lady made her sit on the bench beside her as she waved to the servants to begin serving the feast prepared for their foreign guest. Saya glared at the lady and Melinda tapped her nose with a finger.
“Frowning like that will lead to wrinkles and then what man will want you?”
Saya sniffed haughtily and reached for her knife. Again Melinda grabbed her arm and returned her hand to her lap. Saya opened her mouth to throw a biting remark to the lady, but she caught Merlin’s eye and the magician reminded her with a look of her manners. She mustn’t begin eating before the lord with guests present.
Reminded of the men, Saya finally turned to look at them for the first time. Their leader was a tall, lean man with dark hair and even darker eyes. He smiled like he had not a care in the world and spoke their English with only a trace of an accent. His clothing was rich, yet more suited to a solider than a wealthy lord. His men were similar in appearance, save for one blonde man in the lot.
They began their meal, and Saya all but pouted at the lady’s side, letting conversation float over her head. An elbow to her ribs made her make the pretty with the visitors, but Saya wasn’t interested in fashion for the young ladies in Spain, nor was she interested in the weather. She wanted to know why Merlin had summoned them here.
Was it because of the sword?
She thrust such thoughts out of her mind, knowing that they would eat her raw if she kept thinking about it. Merlin will tell her after they eat, and not a moment before. So she waited, even though that made her stomach roil with anticipation and impatience.
When the meal was finally over and she was allowed to exit the room, Rurik caught up with her just as she began her accent into Merlin’s tower. He followed her, one step behind. Once they were safe in Merlin’s chamber, she turned on him and stood with her arms akimbo.
“Tell me what you know,” she demanded.
Rather than being in complete compliance with her every demand, Rurik rolled his eyes and walked to the book shelf. “Methinks you know more than me.” He slanted a smile at her over his shoulder. “You were always good at ferreting out information.”
She felt her lips purse and quickly turned away, marching over to Merlin’s desk to throw herself into the old rickety chair. “I can’t find out anything. The lady cornered me and made me play dress up tonight.” She picked at the fine fabric of the dress.
Rurik turned and held a book to his chest and let his eyes drink in the sight of his lady love. A small smile curved his lips. “You look very nice.”
She rolled her eyes and folded her arms over her chest. “Whatever.”
He grinned. “You do. Lady Melinda must have had quite a time getting you into that.” He came to stand next to the desk. “I must say, you clean up very nicely.”
She wasn’t blushing. She never blushed. So she scowled. “I want to know why they’re here. I heard Merlin summoned them.”
Rurik laughed. “You see, you do know something. I didn’t even know that.”
Saya huffed a sigh and propped her feet on the desk and leaned back as far as the chair would allow. “That’s nothing. I want to know why.”
“You always do, little bird.”
Both of the two youths jumped as Merlin’s voice filled the room. They turned to the door and found that their guest had joined Merlin. Saya grinned. Finally, she was going to find out what the old wizard was up to. “About time, old man.”
She never noticed how Rurik quickly came to her side, resting one hand on the chair’s back, or how Merlin smiled at her unending quest for information, or how the foreign nobleman gaped at the beautiful young girl from dinner, now sprawled so inelegantly in the chair, demanding attention from her elder.
