Summary: After Kris lost his recording contract when he and Adam publicly came out as a couple, he went to nursing school. Now he's graduated and starting his new job in the ER, Adam's touring, and Kris is lonely. This is when he meets Dr. Jensen Ackles.
Disclaimer: I don't own any of these people. They belong to themselves.
Notes: I started this for a prompt at [livejournal.com profile] aianonlovefest which is basically the summary (with the added addition that Adam finds out and well...I'm not telling what happens next, that'd spoil the fun!) but originally the doctor was supposed to be an OMC. I'm going slightly off prompt because, well, pretty. (I'm shallow.) So, no, not even close to done. Used more the meaning of the prompt with Kris's actions.

It’d been over two years since Kris Allen first made the decision to go to nursing school. It’d been nearly three years since he and Adam Lambert had come out as a couple. While Adam’s career had exploded, his fans clamoring to show their support, Kris’s career had gone downhill.

Jive and 19E had not been happy (understatement) when he and Adam had come out as a couple not long after their albums had dropped. They’d sued Kris even as he and Katy had gone through a public, messy divorce, and they’d won. As a result of that battle, Kris couldn’t perform publicly for the remainder of his contract with Jive and 19E. The divorce had gone in Katy’s favor and she’d won nearly everything else—the place that they’d bought, the car, half of what he’d already made with a stipulation that she’d get half of the profits from his album sales.

He’d ended up moving in with Adam, who had eagerly welcomed him, ready to start their life together.

No public performances did not mean no public appearances but it had gotten old answering questions about the legal battle between him and the label and about his and Adam’s relationship. He’d wanted to show his support of Adam and, despite his frustration, he’d continued to do so, writing songs at night and waiting for the day when he’d be able to actually record and perform them in public.

He’d been hoping for inspiration when he’d decided to go out for a walk a few months after the court appearances had finally ended. Adam had been at the studio, already working on recording remixes of some of his songs, and Kris had decided to take advantage of the alone time. With how frequent it was becoming, he’d thought it was the best option.

It’d been a mistake, he’d soon learned, when he’d been recognized by a couple of men who had decided to make it known just what they thought of him leaving his wife to be with his best friend.

Kris had ended up going to the emergency room because of a broken arm and broken ribs and he’d left with a new determination. He’d been lucky to escape with so few injuries, no matter how badly they’d hurt. After the experience though, he’d been left with the urge to help people the way that he’d been helped. It was a feeling he recognized from the days when he’d happily signed up to go on different missions.

It hadn’t been that hard of a decision to go to nursing school, something that Adam had been wary of. He’d been worried that something would happen again, that someone would decide to go after Kris again because of his decision but Kris had been adamant, refusing to give in until Adam had finally admitted that he couldn’t stop Kris.

“Please just be careful, Kris. I don’t want to get another phone call like last time.” Adam slid a hand around the back of Kris’s neck. “I don’t want anything to happen to you.”

“I promise, I’ll be careful.”

He’d dipped into what was left of his money to pay his tuition once he’d gotten into UCLA’s undergraduate program. Adam had begun touring, the calls home becoming less and less frequent as he toured around Europe. When Adam did call, Kris couldn’t help but notice that the calls were slowly starting to get shorter.

It wasn’t fair to expect Adam to be able to talk to him for too long. Kris remembered what touring had been like and there wasn’t much free time. Add in completely different time zones and what had he been expecting?

That didn’t stop him from feeling lonelier with each passing day.

Classes had helped, even when he tried to just blend into the background. He’d pushed himself, taking on more than most people would have, adding online classes to his schedule as well. With the full load each semester, plus an equally full load for each summer semester, it had only taken two years for Kris to graduate.

Adam had missed his graduation because of the tour. He’d been full of apologies and promises to spend time with him once the tour was over and Kris, well, he’d take what he could get even if he was pretty certain that they still wouldn’t be spending much time together. Kris was starting his new job as a nurse in the emergency room tomorrow and Adam was most likely going to be doing interviews, promoting, and planning for the US tour.

“I better let you go,” Kris said, sitting back. In the background, he could hear someone—it sounded like Lane—shouting that Adam had a series of radio interviews to get to.

“Yeah.” Adam sighed and then shouted, “I’m coming!” His voice was low when he came back. “Good luck tomorrow, babe. Not that you’ll need it, you’ll do fine.”

Kris smiled. “Thanks. Now go charm every interviewer you meet today.”

Adam laughed. “Love you,” he said before hanging up.

Kris didn’t move for a few moments. “I love you, too.” He slid his phone in his pocket and headed for the bedroom, trying to ignore the fact that it was the first time Adam hadn’t waited to hear him say it back.
