Title: The Space In Between

Summary: After Kris lost his recording contract when he and Adam publicly came out as a couple, he went to nursing school. Now he's graduated and starting his new job in the ER, Adam's touring, and Kris is lonely. This is when he meets Dr. Jensen Ackles.
Disclaimer: I don't own any of these people. They belong to themselves.
Notes: I started this for a prompt at [livejournal.com profile] aianonlovefest which is basically the summary (with the added addition that Adam finds out and well...I'm not telling what happens next, that'd spoil the fun!) but originally the doctor was supposed to be an OMC. I'm going slightly off prompt because, well, pretty. (I'm shallow.) So, no, not even close to done. Used more the meaning of the prompt with Kris's actions.

Adam was in Japan now and the last time he’d talked to Kris, they’d only managed to talk for about fifteen minutes. During that conversation, Kris had said he’d made some new friends though he hadn’t really had time to go into detail and Adam had mentioned that a few fangirls had thought he’d like a statue of the god, Jizo.

Kris sighed and rolled his head back and then to the side, grimacing at the way his throat burned when he swallowed.

He did not need to be getting sick right now. He couldn’t afford to. He had to work, he couldn’t just ask something to fill in for him. He’d just drink some tea and he’d be fine.

Not that tea had been helping him all that much over the last few days. He’d done whatever he could think of to make sure his throat didn’t get any worse but nothing had been working.

It was actually probably a good thing that Adam hadn’t been able to call because as of yesterday, Kris could barely talk. It hurt to raise his voice above a whisper and every time he had tried, he’d felt like his throat was closing up.

As much as he didn’t want to admit it, there was no way they’d let him work when he couldn’t even ask people to fill out a form without coughing and feeling like someone was forcing him to swallow nails.

Slowly, he began to dress, wincing with each of his movements.

Letting out a breath and closing his eyes, he took a moment to steady himself before he walked to the car, thankful he wasn’t so bad off that he couldn’t drive.

If he couldn’t call in, he could at least show up and prove that he couldn’t talk.

Kris pulled out a tissue and wiped at his nose, thankful that he’d only had to say the name of the receptionist, Riley, before she’d been wincing in sympathy. Already, she was looking up who she’d be able to call to take over his shift.

“What the hell happened to you?”

Kris turned, offering Jensen a weak smile. “Hey,” he managed, wincing even at that one word.

“Christ, Kris, come on.” Jensen put a hand on his shoulder and gestured in the direction he’d come from before glancing at Riley. “Call Nick, he said he’d be willing to pick up extra shifts if necessary.”

She nodded. “Will do, Dr. Ackles.”

Jensen smiled at her and began pulling Kris down the wall. “Don’t ask where we’re going. I’m pretty sure that’s strep throat and, judging by the way you’re rubbing your ear, you’ve gotten an ear infection on top of that. So we’re going to make sure and then we’re going to get you some antibiotics and then I’m taking you home and making sure you go to bed.”

Kris was tempted to make a dirty joke about doctors and examination rooms but that really wouldn’t help anything and his throat really couldn’t handle it anyway.

He stayed silent the entire time, feeling like a kid as Jensen took his temperature and checked his ears before also checking out his throat.

“I am an awesome doctor who can diagnose people before even examining them,” Jensen declared as he pulled back. “Come on, I’m going to write out a prescription for you and then we’ll drop that off and I’ll take you to your house. Also, you’re not allowed to talk.”

Kris raised an eyebrow and shook his head, holding up his keys. I can drive, he mouthed.

“Kris—“

He shook his head and closed his hands around his keys to show that he wasn’t leaving his car there.

“You’ve got a fever.”

People had driven with fevers before and Kris made sure that was obvious in the look he gave Jensen, who rolled his eyes.

“I’m following you because arguing with you would just take too much time and probably make this worse.” Jensen gave Kris a look that said not to argue. “If you won’t let me drive you, you’re going to let me follow you. One or the other.”

Kris sighed and rolled his eyes, easily recognizing the look on Jensen’s face. It was one that he’d seen only last week at the barbeque that Chris had had when Jensen had insisted that Chris couldn’t barbeque to save his life, a tragedy for someone from the southwest, and then declared that if they wanted ribs that were edible then they’d let Jensen do the grilling.

Fine, he mouthed. He pointed at the door.

“Yeah, yeah, we’re going.” Jensen grinned. “You know, you as a mute is really interesting. I think we should explore this.”

Kris felt fully justified in kicking Jensen in the shin.
