Prompt# 208- All That Glistens Isn’t Gold - Aloft - Tekia - Original

Prompt: All That Glistens Isn’t Gold
Warnings: none
Rating: PG
Summary: Rurik learns that he’s not a subtle as he thought.
Rurik leaned against the stone wall, the cold stone making his elbows twinge as he leaned his full weight on them to peer over the ledge. Saya was down there with a group of youngsters and was making quite the racket.
She had hiked her skirts up once again, tucking the ends into her belt and kicked a ball across the open. Sweat glistened on her brow as she watched the children all chase after the ball, then she was moving once again, tearing after them and giving them a run for their money.
Rurik laughed and hid his mouth behind his arms as he watched her play. She was wild and untamable. She was like the wind, powerful in her actions, but subtle in her presence. One look at her and a body would think she was quite the elite lady, all black hair and brown eyes and full lips with an upturned nose, but Rurik knew different. She was a hellion and passionate.
“Ah, so here you are hiding,” Merlin said as he approached Rurik from behind. Rurik straightened at his mentor’s presence and dipped his head respectfully.
“Sir.” Then he frowned. “I wasn’t hiding.”
Merlin smiled an odd smile that made Rurik feel like he’d been caught doing something wrong. “Weren’t you? Seems to me, that’s just what you’re doing.” The old wizard took a peek over the ledge when laughter floated up from below. “I’m sure Saya would say the same.”
He could feel a blush take his cheeks and he lowered his eyes to his old worn boots. “She wouldn’t hold her tongue,” he finally agreed. He refolded his hands on the wall and once again watched the children and Saya play their made up game of kick the ball.
He could feel Merlin’s eyes on him, but he refused to turn back to see what the old man was looking at. He stubbornly held his gaze forward.
Then Merlin laughed. “You remind me of a king looking out at his serfs. Or rather, a dragon surveying his treasure.”
Rurik flushed up to his ears. “I see no gold in this castle,” he mumbled into his folded arms.
“All that glistens isn’t gold,” the old man said sagely. Rurik would not have rolled his eyes, had Merlin actually sounded sincere. Instead, he sounded very smug, as if he knew something that Rurik didn’t and was ready and willing to tease him about it. Rurik wasn’t sure if he wanted to follow up on this, but decided to grab the lion by the tail.
“What do you mean?”
Merlin pressed his weight against Rurik’s side and eyed Saya, who was now tackling two young boys while two girls watched on in awe. Her shoes had disappeared into the dirt and her hair pins were scattered, leaving her hair to hang down to her hips in wild disarray.
“I do believe she’s glistening very lovely in the sunlight, don’t you agree, Mr. Dragon?”
And once again, Rurik felt a flush take him up to his ears. He buried his face in his arms as Merlin slapped him on the back. The wizard laughed loudly as he walked away.
