Title: It's in the Fine Print

Summary: All Kris Allen ever wanted to do was sing. But in a world where only gay people are allowed to do so, his label has one major condition for his contract - not only will he have to pretend to be gay, but he'll have to pretend to date Adam Lambert. But Adam doesn't do pretend - it's the real thing or not at all.
Disclaimer: I don't own any of these people. They all belong to themselves.
Notes: This is not finished. I was hoping that I could just sit and write the whole thing in one go but that didn't happen so I'm just posting the little that I have. I'm writing this for the first round of [livejournal.com profile] kradamadness at Dreamwidth, for this prompt. I don't know if it'll be exactly what they were looking for but I'm going for it and hopefully it'll work. Prompt was definitely more a theme rather than using the actual words for this. Hope you enjoy!

Kris stared at the contract before looking back up at the man sitting across from him, unable to hide the resignation he felt. Deep down, he’d known that this would happen—it was the law that you couldn’t be a singer unless you were gay after all, so he’d known that he’d be asked to hide the fact that he’d only ever dated women before.

He sighed. “This is really the only way I can do this?” he asked, already knowing the answer.

Simon Fuller nodded. “You know the law, Kris. If you want to sing, this is the way it has to be. If you find a woman that you love enough to marry one day, then you’ll be free to do so. However, that will terminate your contract and you will have to deal with the consequences outlined there.”

Kris loved singing more than anything in the world. He’d known it was what he was going to do from the day he’d first picked up a guitar. Signing with Simon Fuller and 19E was practically a guarantee for success.

In the end, it the decision felt simple.

“Where do I sign?”

Smiling, Simon pointed to the appropriate spot, nodding once Kris was done. “Welcome to 19E, Kris.” Even as Kris began to grin, he continued, “Now, we’ll contact Adam Lambert to set up your first date—“

The smile disappeared from Kris’s face. “What?”

Cale actually fell over laughing when Kris told him. “You have to pretend to date Adam Lambert?” he gasped before bending over again, slapping his knee.

Kris scowled and crossed his arms. “It was in the contract apparently,” he muttered. “He’s their biggest star right now and they want to get me as much promotion as possible and dating Adam Lambert will do that.”

“Okay, so how are you surprised by this if it was in your contract? Didn’t you read it?” When Kris didn’t answer, Cale raised an eyebrow and started laughing again. “You didn’t, did you?”

“Thanks for all the support.”

“Hey, you’re the one that was determined to be a singer despite the fact that only gay people are allowed to.”

Kris didn’t have an answer to that so he just sighed. Cale was right. He’d wanted this, he was the one who hadn’t read his own contract (Christ, how stupid was that?), and now he was going to have to deal with it.

“And, hey, bright side,” Cale added, “At least the guy that they want you to fake date is a guy you once said was attractive. He’s, like, on your list of guys you’d totally go for, right?”

Kris needed new friends.

Kris felt a bit like he was going to throw up. Today was the day that he was going to meet Adam for the first time and he had no idea how this was going to go. This was going to be the meeting where they’d decide how to handle their relationship in public would be.

He let out a breath, forcing himself to relax as he neared the conference room where he knew Adam was waiting. He wasn’t going to come across as the nervous new kid on the block, even if that was exactly what he was. Kris licked his lips and entered the room.

The man standing there was everything that Kris had expected. He was tall and gorgeous and he filled the room with his presence without even seeming to try.

Kris felt small and he hadn’t even gone anywhere near the guy yet.

As the door shut behind him, he offered Adam a smile and hoped that they could at least become friends during this. He didn’t let himself hesitate as he walked up to Adam and held out a hand to him.

“Hi,” he said and immediately wanted to kick himself because really, that was the best he could do? “I’m Kris Allen. It’s nice to meet you.”

Adam grinned. “Likewise, Kris. I’m Adam Lambert.”

It was so tempting to say that he knew but this just wasn’t going to start out this way, he decided as he stepped back a bit. “So...” He trailed off, unsure where he should start. He blew out a breath. “Well, okay, this is awkward.”

Adam laughed, tilting his head back. “Only if we let it be.” He motioned for Kris to sit, waiting until they had both settled in their chairs to continue. “I know it might be easier to start out with small talk but I think it’s important that I make one thing clear.” Adam leaned forward a bit. “I’m not going to pretend to date you.”

Kris could practically feel his eyes widen. “I—what?” It probably shouldn’t feel so shocking to have a man say that to him, Kris realized but he couldn’t help but feel like he’d been slapped across the face.

Shaking his head, Adam didn’t give him time to say anything else. “I’m not into performances unless I’m on stage for a concert,” he said. “Which is why we’re going to be dating for real.”
