Summary: Jacky arrives in Turkey to begin his job as translator.
Jacky discovered that he hated flying on nonstop transatlantic flights. Ten hours after setting off from New York, he had arrived in Turkey, ready for a nice long nap. He was denied this, as his host, one Professor Florian Lehrer, greeted him at the airport and swept him toward a car, taking one of Jacky’s many bags full of books in hand.
“We have our major base in the town of Boğazkale, which is only a short distance from the site. We’ll put up tents and the such at the actual site, and you can leave your books in the trailer so you don’t have to haul them back and forth.”
Florian was a tall man, with balding brown hair and faded green eyes that were still bright with eagerness to learn and explore. He spoke rapidly with a faint German accent in perfect English, of the site they were just beginning work on. He spoke of newly discovered tablets that were just waiting for Jacky’s study.
As he spoke, Jacky could feel his desire to begin work begin to swell. His fingers itched to trace the lines of ancient words that nobody has read for thousands of years. He ducked his head to enter the car and settled in the seat, his hands curled in his lap as Florian followed suit. The professor grinned at him, turning the key in the engine. “You should try to sleep on this drive, yes? You won’t want to sleep when we get there.”
Jacky returned his grin. “I doubt I will. I’ll try to sleep.” He readjusted the seat belt around his shoulders and propped his head on the glass of the window. It was surprisingly cool on his skin.
Then he was asleep, dreaming a dark muddle of images that made no sense, but left him anxious and tense. He woke himself with a start and found himself gazing out at a field of both green and brown grass and jagged hills. The sky was peppered with white wisps of clouds and the air had grown noticeably cooler. He shifted in his seat, facing forward and noticed the town they were now rapidly approaching.
“Boğazkale?”
Florian hummed in agreement and slowed as he entered a sudden press of tourist. “They come to see Hattusa. It’s good that we have such press, but as the same time I just wish they would all go home and leave us to it.”
Jacky chuckled and rubbed his hands over his eyes. He was still tired, but now a fluttering in his stomach told him sleep was going to be long in coming. He leaned forward in his seat and watched the people pass.
The natives were darker than most tourist, with dark hair and eyes, while the tourists were brightly clothed and loud. Jacky sank into his seat and watched the people pass by as Florian drove slowly.
Then a picket caught his eye. “What’s that say?” he asked, pointing.
Florian laughed, “You can’t read it?”
Jacky smiled, “I read ancient languages, not modern ones.”
“It is a protest. The Turks are against foreign archeologists. They’ve been stolen from before. To them, we’re nothing but marauders, intent on stealing their heritage.”
Jacky lost his smile, then. “We’re not taking anything out of the country, correct?”
Florian was quick to deny. “No, heaven’s no. This expedition is just to uncover more of their past and to learn. Never to steal from them. In fact, we’ve invited Turkish professors to help and run the dig.”
“That’s something.”
“Still, be careful when on your own. There are some fanatics running around. I just don’t trust them.” His hands tightened on the wheel and he gazed out at the crowded street with a solemn gaze.
A few moments later, he pulled to a stop before a small hotel. “This is where we’re staying.” They quickly unloaded the car and set about securing Jacky’s room. Once his bags were deposited in the room, Florian once again swept him into the car. Finally, they were off to see the whole reason for this adventure, the site.
