Summary: All Kris Allen ever wanted to do was sing. But in a world where only gay people are allowed to do so, his label has one major condition for his contract - not only will he have to pretend to be gay, but he'll have to pretend to date Adam Lambert. But Adam doesn't do pretend - it's the real thing or not at all.
Disclaimer: I don't own any of these people. They all belong to themselves.
Notes: This is not finished. I was hoping that I could just sit and write the whole thing in one go but that didn't happen so I'm just posting the little that I have. I'm writing this for the first round of [livejournal.com profile] kradamadness at Dreamwidth, for this prompt. I don't know if it'll be exactly what they were looking for but I'm going for it and hopefully it'll work. Prompt was definitely more a theme rather than using the actual words for this. Hope you enjoy!

The first half of this is what I posted last week, the rest is what I wrote for this week.

Kris stared at the contract before looking back up at the man sitting across from him, unable to hide the resignation he felt. Deep down, he’d known that this would happen—it was the law that you couldn’t be a singer unless you were gay after all, so he’d known that he’d be asked to hide the fact that he’d only ever dated women before.

He sighed. “This is really the only way I can do this?” he asked, already knowing the answer.

Simon Fuller nodded. “You know the law, Kris. If you want to sing, this is the way it has to be. If you find a woman that you love enough to marry one day, then you’ll be free to do so. However, that will terminate your contract and you will have to deal with the consequences outlined there.”

Kris loved singing more than anything in the world. He’d known it was what he was going to do from the day he’d first picked up a guitar. Signing with Simon Fuller and 19E was practically a guarantee for success.

In the end, it the decision felt simple.

“Where do I sign?”

Smiling, Simon pointed to the appropriate spot, nodding once Kris was done. “Welcome to 19E, Kris.” Even as Kris began to grin, he continued, “Now, we’ll contact Adam Lambert to set up your first date—“

The smile disappeared from Kris’s face. “What?”

Cale actually fell over laughing when Kris told him. “You have to pretend to date Adam Lambert?” he gasped before bending over again, slapping his knee.

Kris scowled and crossed his arms. “It was in the contract apparently,” he muttered. “He’s their biggest star right now and they want to get me as much promotion as possible and dating Adam Lambert will do that.”

“Okay, so how are you surprised by this if it was in your contract? Didn’t you read it?” When Kris didn’t answer, Cale raised an eyebrow and started laughing again. “You didn’t, did you?”

“Thanks for all the support.”

“Hey, you’re the one that was determined to be a singer despite the fact that only gay people are allowed to.”

Kris didn’t have an answer to that so he just sighed. Cale was right. He’d wanted this, he was the one who hadn’t read his own contract (Christ, how stupid was that?), and now he was going to have to deal with it.

“And, hey, bright side,” Cale added, “At least the guy that they want you to fake date is a guy you once said was attractive. He’s, like, on your list of guys you’d totally go for, right?”

Kris needed new friends.

~*~*~

Kris felt a bit like he was going to throw up. Today was the day that he was going to meet Adam for the first time and he had no idea how this was going to go. This was going to be the meeting where they’d decide how to handle their relationship in public would be.

He let out a breath, forcing himself to relax as he neared the conference room where he knew Adam was waiting. He wasn’t going to come across as the nervous new kid on the block, even if that was exactly what he was. Kris licked his lips and entered the room.

The man standing there was everything that Kris had expected. He was tall and gorgeous and he filled the room with his presence without even seeming to try.

Kris felt small and he hadn’t even gone anywhere near the guy yet.

As the door shut behind him, he offered Adam a smile and hoped that they could at least become friends during this. He didn’t let himself hesitate as he walked up to Adam and held out a hand to him.

“Hi,” he said and immediately wanted to kick himself because really, that was the best he could do? “I’m Kris Allen. It’s nice to meet you.”

Adam grinned. “Likewise, Kris. I’m Adam Lambert.”

It was so tempting to say that he knew but this just wasn’t going to start out this way, he decided as he stepped back a bit. “So...” He trailed off, unsure where he should start. He blew out a breath. “Well, okay, this is awkward.”

Adam laughed, tilting his head back. “Only if we let it be.” He motioned for Kris to sit, waiting until they had both settled in their chairs to continue. “I know it might be easier to start out with small talk but I think it’s important that I make one thing clear.” Adam leaned forward a bit. “I’m not going to pretend to date you.”

Kris could practically feel his eyes widen. “I—what?” It probably shouldn’t feel so shocking to have a man say that to him, Kris realized but he couldn’t help but feel like he’d been slapped across the face.

Shaking his head, Adam didn’t give him time to say anything else. “I’m not into performances unless I’m on stage for a concert,” he said. “Which is why we’re going to be dating for real.”

Kris stared at him, sure that he had heard wrong. “What?”

Looking just a bit amused, Adam smiled. “I don’t do fake dating.” He leaned back. “Which is why if we’re going to do this, we’re going to do it for real. We’ll have to get to know each other before we come out as a couple, obviously, but that’s what these first few dates will be for.”

“What?” Kris repeated.

Adam was still smiling and now he raised an eyebrow. “How does dinner at 7:00 sound?”

Unsure of what else to say, Kris could only repeat, “What?”

~*~*~

“Dinner,” Kris said for the fifth time. “He wants to have dinner with me.”

“Keep repeating it,” Cale told him. “That’ll make it untrue.”

“Shut up.” Kris scowled at him. “It’s weird, okay? I’m not gay but suddenly I’m going to have to date a guy? What am I supposed to do about that?”

“Here’s a crazy thought,” Cale raised an eyebrow, “You could do what your contract says and date him.”

“But—“

“Or you could lose your contract and just not sing ever again and go to school for a business degree or something.”

Kris groaned and dropped his head into his hands. “I hated my business classes. I could never bring myself to pay attention.”

“Clearly, since you didn’t even know enough to read your contract.”

Smacking Cale in the arm, Kris sighed. “I hate when you’re right.” He made a face when Cale laughed. “Shut up,” he repeated.

“So, you’re going to do it?”

Kris let out a breath and nodded. “Yeah. It looks like I’m going out to dinner with Adam Lambert.”

This time, Cale smirked. “I really hope there are pictures.”

“I hate you.”

Kris was going to be sick. He was seriously going to get sick and then he wasn’t going to be able to go to dinner with Adam and his career was going to end before it even began. There was also the fact that he’d heard that Adam was a nice guy and there was a chance that he was going to miss out on a good friendship.

Or he was entirely crazy and he should really stop over thinking this and just get ready for dinner.

Yeah, he was going to go with the second one.

Kris swallowed and took a deep breath before looking at himself in the mirror. He needed to just stop thinking about this and just go out to dinner. With Adam Lambert, who happened to be a huge recording artist. Who was also gay and supposed to be his boyfriend.

“Okay,” Kris said. “You’re just going to go out to dinner. And you’re not going to act like a complete moron and you’re not going to be a complete spaz.”

Not acting like a total spaz was going to be hard if he kept talking to himself in the mirror.

Kris cleared his throat and rolled his shoulders. He was an adult. He wasn’t a fifteen year old going on their first date or some random groupie that wanted to throw himself at Adam. He was another artist and he was going to start acting like it.

Oh, Christ, he was going to be sick.

A knock on the door interrupted his thoughts announcing the arrival of the driver and Kris groaned. He took another moment and then gave himself a shake to relax before going to answer the door.

“Mr. Allen,” the man greeted. “If you’re ready to go, I’ll be making sure that you get to dinner.”

Kris nodded and, after making sure he had his wallet and keys, shut and lock the door behind him. “Yeah,” he nodded, “I’m ready.”

Kris couldn’t have said how long the car ride took if someone paid him. He was busy trying not to hyperventilate and completely freak out about the fact that whenever he got to whatever place Adam had picked out, there was a good chance that there’d be paparazzi.

What if Adam had picked a more formal place and Kris was totally dressed too casual for this? What if he was overdressed? Why hadn’t he asked where they were going?

Well, really, that last question was easy to answer. He hadn’t asked because he’d been too shocked by the idea that Adam would be expecting more than just the occasional kiss or whatever in public. He’d be looking for the real thing and despite everything, Kris wasn’t entirely sure that he’d be able to do this.

Music, Kris reminded himself. He was doing this so that he could make music and do what he’d always dreamed of doing.

That thought managed to calm him down long enough for him to realize that the car was coming to a stop. He glanced around, confused when he realized how quiet the area was. Just where had Adam told the driver to bring him?

The door opened and Kris sucked in a breath before getting out, unable to stop his jaw from dropping slightly and his eyes from widening at the sight in front of him.

Adam’s house. They were having their first date at Adam’s house.

He’d been prepared for camera flashes and people not bothering to respect their privacy while they sat and ate and tried not to act completely awkward around each other. What he hadn’t been prepared for was complete and total privacy.

Rather than let anyone—the driver or Adam, if he was looking out the window—see him have another freak out, Kris lifted his chin slightly and began to head toward the front door after giving the driver a thank you and a smile.

Showtime.
