Summary: Continuation of my Merlin story.
When dawn came, Saya glared at the curtain that let the light in through her bedchamber’s window. She tossed a pillow over her head and turned her back to it with a moan. She hated dawn. She really did.
A few minutes later she realized that she was fully awake and threw the pillow away from her, followed by the blanket. She sat up and scrubbed a hand through her hair, ignoring how it tangled in her sleep once again. She touched the cold stone floor with her toes and rushed to the thick rug laying under the water basin.
Once she was groomed, she set out for the kitchens with a near skip in her step. Her stomach growled loudly on the way and a passing guard smirked at her. She stuck her tongue out at his back and turned into the kitchen, knocking into a maid on the way. The maid rushed away with a mop bucket and Saya seated herself at the table, awaiting the cook’s notice.
Once fed, she made her way up to Merlin’s tower. The room was still cool from the night winds and Rurik was already seated at the desk, pouring over a book. The wily old wizard was nowhere to be found.
Grinning, Saya crept forward on silent feet and approached Rurik. Just as she raised her hands to scare him, he said, “I know you’re there, hun.”
Pouting, Saya dropped her hands. “What gives? You’re so into that book you should never have noticed me.”
Rurik looked up with a smile. “I always know when you’re near.”
Saya could feel a blush on her cheeks as her breath caught. There was such love in his eyes she didn’t know how to react. She looked away and lowered herself to the bench at his side and glanced at the book he was studying.
He chuckled and brushed his hand over hers before pushing the book to sit between them. They both read the pages in silence as they waited for their mentor to arrive. They held hands and Rurik rubbed his thumb over the ring still settled on the ring finger of her right hand.
Many minutes later, a rock jumped through the window and the two started in surprise. After sharing a glance, Saya stood and peered out the massive window. Far below, in the courtyard, the Lord, Lady, and Merlin himself were gathered with a group of strangers. A cold chill went down her spine as Rurik joined her at the window. He placed a hand on the small of her back.
“Who are they?”
“I don’t know.” She turned away and walked toward the door. “I’m going to find out.”
“Merlin won’t like it.”
“He threw the rock up here.”
“Don’t go, Saya.”
She smiled at him over her shoulder and opened the door. “I am going. Stay if you want, but I think we’re wanted on ground level.”
He grinned. “You think you’re wanted wherever you want to be, even when you’re not wanted.”
She returned his grin and lightly skipped down the dark stairway. She was nearing the exit when there came a sudden rumbling from above her. The ground trembled and she fell to her knees, screaming and putting her hands over her head. The walls shook and there came a loud explosion of sound.
She huddled close to the wall as stones and cement fell from above her, as the stairway fell away and the world turned to dust and screams.
As suddenly as it started, it ended. She stayed crouched and trembling. Her hands hurt and she thought they must have been cut by falling rocks, but she was remarkably unhurt. She peered out from under her dusty hair and saw darkness and dust and bits of sunlight peeking through the rubble.
The main hall before her was untouched, but the tower was a mess. Parts of the wall were missing and the stairs were destroyed. She carefully gathered her feet under her and leaned heavily on a wall, hoping that it would still hold her.
Then she remembered Rurik.
Her head snapped up and she breathed a sigh of relief that the upper level was still there. Although, how untouched was it?
She snapped her fingers and rushed up the stairs, the rubble falling away from her path. She shoved the door open, forcing the debris away.
The room looked terrible, as terrible as the stairwell. Where was Rurik!?
The beams from the roof had fallen, taking the thatches with it, making the room crackle with her every step.
“R-Rurik?” She tripped and fell to her knees. “Rurik!?”
There was no response and she screamed his name again. Merlin was suddenly there, his hand on her shoulders. He pulled her into an embrace. “Look, child, he lives still.”
She turned to see him point to where Rurik laid under a mess of wood and paper, blood clotting on his brow. Her breath caught and she scrambled toward him.
“Don’t move him, luv.”
She froze and turned wide eyes to Merlin. “Why has this happened?”
Merlin shook his head and knelt next to her. “Later, first we must see to Rurik. Quickly now, he doesn’t have much time.”
Trembling, Saya touched a hand to Rurik’s pale cheek. “He’ll be alright, won’t he?”
Merlin’s hands settled over Rurik’s chest, “If we hurry.”
Nodding, Saya leaned forward and pressed her lips to Rurik’s brow. “Hold on, love. We’re here for you. I’m here for you.” She had to swallow hard to continue. “You know that though. You always know when I’m near, so I’ll stay here until you wake up.”
Merlin poured magic into his hands and began his healing magic.
