Summary: Jack wakes up under the night sky by himself, but not alone.

Jacky woke up laying on the hard ground, a small rock jabbing into his lower back. He groaned and turned onto his side, one hand flailing about to shove that annoying pebble away. He never opened his eyes, as his head was aching, throbbing with a migraine. Once he had done enough shoving at the blanket under him, he figured the rock surely must be gone, then he flopped back on his back, sighing when the rock was indeed gone.
He thought that perhaps he had did sleep some more, as when he next became aware of his surroundings, his head didn’t ache as much, and his back didn’t hurt any longer from the place the rock had jabbed at him.
He even opened his eyes and gasped at the sight above him.
It was the night sky, but unlike any night sky he had ever seen before.
In this world, there were no cities made up of thousands and thousands of electric bulbs fighting the stars for dominance of the night. Here, there was nothing but the stars. Billions of them. They littered the sky in a silky stream that he knew to be the Milky Way, and it all but stilled his heart to look at it. What constellations he once knew were lost amid the glory of this starry night.
Slowly, his eyes never leaving the massive expanse of space laid out before him, Jacky sat up and simply let the peace of it all sink into his bones. Even the presence inside him was calm and basking in the knowledge that they were small compared to the universe around them.
It was heaven, just then, Jacky thought. After all he had been through, this moment, this silent, calm moment, was heaven.
Then that moment was shattered when he heard a twig snap to his left. His whole body jerked back to the present and he realized that he was out in the wilderness somewhere in ancient Turkey, with no survival gear, nor knowledge. He had no weapons, and the clothes he was wearing did little to ward off the cooling night air. He shivered and felt the presence inside him swell until Jacky had no room in him for panic.
His heart beat slowed until he could think clearly. There was blankets made of fur laying under him and over his legs. There was a well-tended fire, with a clay pot full of boiling water nestled in the red embers. A horse dozed nearby, and a crude saddle was propped against a tree.
He very obviously wasn’t alone. Jacky pulled the blanket around his knees closer and looked around him. Whoever was with him, wasn’t nearby, but couldn’t be that far off, could they? He felt the panic in him trying to take control, but the being inside him wouldn’t give it room to grow. He closed his eyes and tried to concentrate only on breathing.
He remembered the fire, the rush of fleeing from the invading forces, but beyond that, nothing. Still, he was alive and well, so something was watching out for him.
He opened his eyes and looked up at the galaxy spread out before him and instantly felt calm again. The Milky Way, huh? Maybe more like spilt honey, he thought inanely. Somehow, that thought made him feel instantly better.
There was someone watching out for him, he suddenly knew.
