Summary: On one of their first cases together, Miranda and Pearl hide under a table.
Miranda lifted the white linen drape that covered the table and invited Pearl to get under it. The other woman looked at her quizically but obeyed. Miranda soon followed.
"I swear those tables didn't use to be so low," she said as she sat down next to Pearl, having to bend her neck.
"Wouldn't it be you that have grown since you last hid under a table."
"Maybe," replied Miranda not very seriously.
Pearl shifted her body, trying to find a more comfortable position. "Can you please remind me why we have to hid under there?"
"Because it's the best way to eaves drop on people. No one ever check under the table or look at the floor in such a reception."
"We could have just easily hiden a bug in the room," complained Pearl.
"Where would be the fun in that. Plus, bugs can get damaged," she pointed out.
"But they can't necessarily get tracked. If we get discovered...," she left the phrase unfinished on purpose, trying to instil the worse in Miranda's mind.
"Then we'll just have to run really fast. Or disappear." She winked at her friend.
"Miranda," she started disapprovingly. "We can't use them all the time. They're not toys."
"I know, I kwow. But still, we got them. We might as well use them, no?"
Pearl simply shook her head in exasperation. Her friend's eyes were still shining with sheer excitement and she had quickly learned that there was nothing she could do in those moments to make her change her mind.
"So...," started Pearl after a long minute of silent. "What do we do until the guests start showing up?"
"Tell me a story."
"We're not kids anymore Miranda."
"So? I still like to hear the myths of this world."
"I don't know them," replied Pearl her body tensing.
"Ok," replied Miranda softly. "We don't have to talk about it." She paused before adding quickly, "would you like to hear about my world?"
"Yes." Pearl's body relaxed immediatly.
"Ok. Humm..." Miranda tried to think of something to start with but her world was too vast to be summed up in a few sentences. "What would you like to know," she finally asked, unable to decide with what to start.
"Where do you live?"
"In Wales," replied Miranda automatically. She laughed before adding, "sorry. You don't know where Wales is, do you?"
Pearl smiled at her. "No, I don't."
"Well, it's the the United Kingdom which is a big island. You remember when we went to the sea?" Pearl nodded. "An island is a bit of ground surrounded by sea. Though the United Kingdom is a big island. You can't see the water unless you're close to it. I grew up in a the suburb of a big town but I barely ever saw the town itself until I was 12. My parents did all they could to keep me at home or stricly in the neighbourhood. They thought it was too dangerous in the city."
"Are the cities just like here?"
"No. They're..." Miranda stopped. She didn't know how to explain to someone who came from this world. "It's so different, I can't really describe. I'll have to take you there after this case."
"Miranda..."
"I know, I know. They're no games. But how can you understand their full magic if you don't use them, if you don't travel?"
"I like my world."
"I know but..." Miranda was cut short by the sound of the door being opened. The first guests had arrived. "Don't think I'm giving up on the topic," she whispered to Pearl. "I'll take you to my world after this case."
Pearl didn't reply. She wanted to visit this other world, she wanted to see its wonders and possibilities. After all, it was what her grand mother had told her to do, but at the same time she knew if she used it too much she would get noticed and then she wouldn't have a choice to make, she would be forced into one path.
"Maybe...," she finally whispered back before focusing all of her attention on the voices of the guests.
