Deadly Game
The endless humming of the train gliding over the tracks droned in her ears, adding to her plethora of steadily angering thoughts. Antsy fingers continued to play with the whip hanging from her leather belt. She had closed the blinds to rid herself of looking at the overgrown landscape between East Hampton and North City several times, and yet instinct kept her on edge as she’d move one panel to look outside.
Her boots plodded on the carpeted flooring as she moved from one seat to the next, the guards stationed in the cabin with her only exchanging glances to communicate their own unease. Upon hearing one of them sigh uncomfortably, her head snapped his direction.
“If you’re so bored, find something to do, you little wall flower!” Her tone shot through the air like a knife and into his chest, making his breath suddenly hitch. “Go to the next car and find out how much longer it’ll be till we get there! I hate trains, but I hate waiting even more.”
The guard at first looked at his partner like the woman they were with was bordering on the insane, but when she elicited something similar to a screeching sound, he obeyed her order and rushed out the narrow door.
“Crazy lady…” he muttered after shutting the door and turning to look straight into nothing but green.
Delilah huffed the stray hairs out of her face and marched back to the eastward window. She folded her arms vehemently and stared at the streaks of constantly changing light coming in through the blinds. The roar of the tracks was giving her a headache, as was the stuffiness of this moldy train car put into use by the government only recently. She couldn’t believe her superior would put her to work in such pitiful conditions, much less travel in the same manner.
The second guard was watching her carefully and was afraid she might make a move for her whip if he should even breathe too loud. He had noticed how frequently she would toy with it, fingering it almost like it were a pet to be loved. He found himself wondering if the stories about the woman were true – if she would be what one would consider a demon. Of course, demons were merely stories conjured by the elderly to frighten the children, he figured, but according to what he had heard Delilah was beginning to fit the part.
Her nails snagged and snapped into her sleeve. “He’s taking too long. Go find out what he’s doing.”
“But… the communications port? Who will guard it or you while I’m gone?” He instantly knew he was a fool for asking when her scourge came at him like a snake, its bite leaving a stinging sensation on his cheek.
“I don’t need protection, you idiot!! GO!” Her commanding voice practically threw him out the door, sending the poor man out to inspect what had become of his partner.
She sighed in disgust and slid a panel up to see if her view had changed. There was a body rolling on the ground to pique her interest, but when the body stood up and started running back towards the train, she instantly recognized it.
“What the hell?” Delilah darted for the door, flung it open and looked about for the two men she’d sent out just moments prior. Instead she was met with a stamping foot just above her on the roof of the car.
A flash of gleeful red shot across green eyes as the intruder spoke, “Long time no see, tramp.”
“You little bitch!” Delilah’s temper flared as she flew up the ladder to pursue her defensively retreating prey. Drawing out her whip gladly, she tilted her head and smiled. “I’m so glad you came to see me, Miss Landon. You’ve made my job easier.”
The first lash missed when Reia easily took a step back, her arms spread out for balance on the speeding vehicle. “Glad I could accommodate your needs so well. I just wanted to repay the kindness you showed Nick the other day.”
Delilah chuckled and let her leather snake slither on the roof a bit, gradually taunting Reia’s eyes until she made her next move. “But I haven’t even touched him, my dear.”
“Don’t give me that crap.” Reia replied, ducking to avoid the next hit. “You practically raped him with your eyes! Well guess what, you can’t have him.”
Reia gained a little momentum and went to grab Delilah’s dominant arm, but her counteragent expected it and merely pushed her away. Her heel clicked on the metal below her as she took a step towards Reia who was countering her move with another step backwards.
“So does that make him yours? Do you intend to have him to love and comfort as a wife would her husband?” Delilah’s eyes burned with a crazy, though distilled fire, lust of the kill and the thrill of the hunt expounding from the roots in her mind. “I’ve already had him in more ways than one, my dear and young lady. I’ve had him in my clutches as fear filled his body. To have one be afraid of you is the most exotic pleasure one can experience.”
Another attack whistled at her when she moved her shoulder just in time. “You’re a sick and twisted woman, Delilah, really. You don’t know anything except the lies you’ve been told. You’re missing out on an entire world!”
“The lies I’ve been told?” Delilah scoffed, her whip curling behind her. “What about all the lies you’ve been fed for the past twenty-seven years? Do you even know who you really are?”
