Will Atherton brought his son to a new development in the pristine woods of Washington State, thinking it was a great place to live. But there is something in the woods. Something watching. Something dark. Even the reassurances of soft-spoken and confident Sheriff Liam Roarke can't chase away Will's growing awareness of something that doesn't want he or his son or anyone else to live on the mountain.

Previously: The flashlight caught on the wings of flies and Alex felt his neck prickle.
Behind him, Faith gagged at the sudden overwhelming smell. "Oh, my God!" She covered her nose, eyes watering. "It smells like a--"
"Quiet." Alex's bundle was burning a warning against his neck. "It's close."
"Beau!" Faith ran to her aging golden retriever, who whined weakly, thumping his feathery tail. His body was trapped under a heavy log.
"...Just like how we found Sylvie Hollis," Alex muttered. He took the flashlight from Faith and shone it around the room, seeing insects buzzing around the bodies of other trapped animals, their eyes glassy and dead. Disemboweled squirrels hanging from sharp pegs of wood--
"Like a food locker..." Alex mused softly, the hair on the back of his neck stiff.
Close. It was so close.
"Alex, I can't lift this on my own!" Faith pleaded.
Alex hastened over to Faith and handed her the flashlight and his shotgun. "We can't stay long," he whispered urgently. "If anything comes in here while I help your dog, don't hesitate, Faith. Shoot to kill!"
Liam/Will NC 17 eventually
