Any advice for a newbie?

I have read many fics, but I am considering making my own mark on the community and beginning to write some of my own. For some reason, this makes me uber nervous. Do any of you amazing writers have any advice for me? Tips and techniques that work and things to avoid? Anything will be appreciated!
