Summary: Being calm while everything else in his life it's is difficult

Staring up at the moon, he smiles. His beloved always did like nights like this. Ones where the moon and stars stand out brightly in the winter dark sky. Nights where its just him, the night sky and his beloved’s smile.

His smiles falls at the thought of that smile.

The thud of horse hoofs catches his attention, making him frown and turn around towards the sound. He looks down the hill to catching the sight of cloaked figure breaking through the edge of the nearby forest. The rider pauses for a second, the turn of their cloak stating that they are staring ahead before quickly glancing up at him.

He sighs and returns staring up at the sky.

A moment later, the gently swish of grass starts up and ends a bit towards his left. The figure pauses for a moment, before sitting beside him on the flat boulder he was sitting on.

“He always did love nights like this.” She says . He glances at her at the corner of his eye. She has taken off the hood of her cloak. Her brown hair is still neatfully arrayed in an braided cornet on her head.

“Yes.” He answers.

There is silence for a moment on that he knows she feels is uncomfortable. He can just feel the questions she wants to ask.

“Is,” she begins looking down at the hill, “Is this your way of moving on?”

He smiles faintly at her hesitancy, “A bit.” He says. “He wouldn’t want me to sit around being a sad about his death.”

Her lips quirk a bit, “ I agree. He wouldn’t.” She lifts her head a bit a let’s out a small giggle. “He would have probably hit you over the head and called you on being to dramatic, then sighed, shaking his head and complaining about dealing with such a big baby as you.”

His lips lengthen and stretch to the first true smile he’s worn in a year. “He would have definitely been mad about me keeping all his stuff for so long.” And it fades.

She reaches out and wraps her hand around his upper shoulder, “Kaname.”

“It’s fine.” He says slowly, placing his hand on top of hers, “I’m out of the self pitying phase.”

“You know it wasn’t your fault.” She says slowly.

Kaname stiffens, tightening his hand on hers. “I appreciate the sentiment,” he says loosening his grip and dropping his hand as he turns towards her. “But lying will not make me feel better about it.”

She stares back at for a moment before shift her gaze towards her grazing as if acknowledging his point.

He leans forward, resting his left elbow on his knee and resting his head in his palm, “I plan to continue his research.”

Her head whips back at him with blazing speed. “What?”

Kaname smirks, “He always said that we were monsters with inflated egos and false self importance.”

“Kaname.” She says slowly, “You know he never meant that about us.”

Kaname stands up, “No.” he says, the memory of terrified and betrayed eyes glaring up at him, whispering brokenly , ‘You’re just like the rest of them’ echoing in his brain. “There are no exceptions.” And walks back down to his camp.
