Theory

“Do you always make it a point to be a thorn in everyone’s side?” Reia said out of the blue, drawing Gabriel’s normally unsettling gaze upon her. She wasn’t afraid of him. In fact, she suspected it was the other way around.

“I see facts and I point them out,” he responded dryly, not giving into Reia’s desires to tamper with his never before seen rage. “You’re a blemish on the record of recent history. It’s my responsibility to see that you don’t make more of a mess than you already have.”

Michael, growing concerned with where the discussion was heading so soon between his daughter and close friend, stepped in to intervene. “Hey, cut it out. No one’s jumping down anyone’s throat right now for anything. Reia, stop picking fights.”

Reia wanted to glare at her father, but directed the harsh look Gabriel’s way instead. “I’m not picking a fight. He’s the one that’s being a pain in the ass pointing out everyone’s faults. I’d like to put him in his place and find out his weakness.”

“And you’d fail in doing so.” Michael added, though obviously with great strain. Gabriel was always stoic and never expressed weakness towards anything, so Michael knew Reia’s hate driven efforts would be in vain from the get-go. “Leave it be.”

Giving into her father’s persuasion, Reia let the matter drop for all of five seconds when Gabriel spoke in his horrible monotone again. “You were the mistake we failed to eradicate because Michael was too soft. Had we killed you when we had the chance all those years ago we wouldn’t be in this predicament of trying to protect you from those that would seek the knowledge you apparently carry.”

A sensitive nerve was touched and Reia’s temper rose again. “What did you just say?”

Knowing he was driving her closer to her breaking point, and thus proving his theory that her temper was the key to unlocking this demonic-like programming within her, Gabriel went on. “Eli’s attempts at keeping you under control all those years did little to benefit his research, much less society. He’s made things worse by keeping his project a secret, and his death proved it.”

“Gabriel, shut up. You’re starting a fight that you don’t have to.” Michael warned, keeping a close eye on Reia’s shaking body. He could tell the volcano was nearing the eruption phase.

“But she simply brought up the topic of weaknesses. She is obviously yours, Eli’s memory is hers… especially the way he died. You never told her, did you, Michael?”

His tone irked her beyond reasoning; cold and unfeeling. He spoke of the dead as if they never existed or mattered to any one person on the earth. She hated this man already and she’d only known him for a few days.

Michael shook his head angrily. “That was only your assumption based on sloppy evidence. You never could prove it, so don’t go telling Reia your unnecessary conclusions.”

But now she wanted to know. Curiosity was tugging at her nerves and she was about to burst with this unsettling desire to know what Gabriel was hiding from her. She loathed him and his twisted mind, yet she wanted to know…

“Tell me.” She declared openly, surprising her father instantly, but Gabriel as usual wasn’t phased.

“Reia, honey, you don’t need to know. It’s just his theory-“

“Tell me anyway. I’m an adult like the rest of you, not a kid. I can handle it.” Reia replied in her defense, now growing irritated with Michael a bit since he wanted to keep her from the supposed truth as well. “If I’m the only one out of all of us that doesn’t know I’ll be even angrier, so tell me now before I find out from someone I might kill for telling me.”

Gabriel put down his notebook, the wrinkled and rough edges of the paper bent here and there from so much use. It was his place where he kept track of all of his thoughts and theories, but apparently for this one he didn’t need to flip through it again to answer her thirsty question.

“According to my research, Eli committed suicide. He couldn’t take the pressure in accepting that his project would ultimately fail if he didn’t complete it before your apparent wedding date.”

Reia’s cold stare burned a hole in Gabriel’s forehead, anger, hate and anxiety focused into one stream of negative energy that Michael was noticing was beginning to surge out of control. He put a hand on her shoulder to offer comfort, but to also hold her back should she find the sudden urge to lash out at the eldest of the group.

“It’s just a hunch, though, Reia, supported by some of the evidence surrounding his death. Nothing was proven…”

“And let me guess,” Reia interrupted without looking at anyone else except Gabriel. “This was the guy that was the real investigator working on Eli’s murder case?”

Michael swallowed nervously, daring to look his daughter in the eye, which she, of course, didn’t return. “Not the primary one, but undercover he did do some work…”

“My primary duty is investigating for the benefit of the State. Eli Vincent’s case was plainly in concordance with more than the government, however, so I had no choice but to be involved.” Gabriel told her without feeling as always. It was part of his training years ago to be cold and dry with victims of his work.

Through surprising tears, but still glaring directly at him, Reia spoke again, “So… you think my Eli killed himself because he couldn’t handle the stress of his work? He may have been devoted to his research, but he’d never kill himself over it.”

“You’re missing a key factor, Miss Landon…” Gabriel’s tone seemed to echo, halting all movement in the universe as everyone focused on him. “You were his work.”

Then there was silence. Michael dared not utter a single word for fear of disturbing the peace that may have been washing over Reia’s heart in that moment, but if he knew his little girl, this startling revelation may have just caused a tidal wave to crash into shore.

“If you find the truth that difficult to believe…” Gabriel began, only to suddenly have a fist connect with his jaw, throwing him back into a rotting bookshelf that collapsed on impact. Recovering from his brief moment of surprise, he wiped the blood from the corner of his mouth away with his thumb and looked up into the enraged eyes of the young woman he had apparently insulted.

Her breathing was heavy and her figure looked as though it were a dark, frightening silhouette sent to haunt one in his nightmares. “As we’ve all been saying, your apparent truth is just a theory… but you should know one thing about Eli. He would never give up on any challenge, even if it was causing more grief than it was worth. Your theory is as empty as your heart.”
