The Trial of Fear

The shrill sound of Yukina’s scream shattered Hiei’s concentration as the walls became covered in thick, pulsating tissue, as if they were alive now and eager to swallow them up. He grappled for her hand to bring her to him, a sudden rumble beneath them causing him to stumble forward before stopping short of the water now on the ground.

“What the hell?” he said, circling around to see the water not only surrounding them, but it was steadily rising. At ankle levels for now, it wouldn’t stay there long. Instinct then took over and he raced towards the door they had come from, slamming against it in an effort to force it open, but it was jammed, as if the force they were colliding with knew they would try to escape the deal they’d made at the mansion’s entrance. Still he tried to beat against it, using his whole body weight to break the wood apart if he had to.

Yukina was pushing against it when she heard something snarl. She gasped and looked about her for a moment, constantly second guessing this treacherous environment they’d been subjected to. She surveyed the surroundings, discovering that the water was still continuing to rise at an unsettling pace, so she returned to her work on the door.

Upon noticing the same conclusion that Yukina did concerning the water’s depth, Hiei gave up on the door all together. “Damn curse is keeping us from backtracking. Only thing we can do is move forward and hope we don’t drown before we find the exit.”

Yanking her with him, Hiei trudged through the rising water, the odorous liquid murky and of foul taste as it splashed into his mouth. He spat it out and continued forward until he heard the same gurgling sound his sister had just moments prior. He froze until he saw a sudden splash from just a few yards away, a surprising fear of the unknown gripping him by the throat and sending his instincts reeling.

As it quickly caught their scent, it began to move rapidly towards them and when Yukina screamed again, Hiei scanned the premises until he found a ledge just wide enough for Yukina to be able to stand upon. Without her permission, he hoisted her onto it and rushed to find his own means of temporary salvation, meanwhile drawing the invisible creature towards him. Finally he discovered a ledge identical to Yukina’s across the corridor, pressing his back into the beating scarlet tissue while the monster leapt periodically to try and nip at his feet.

“Hiei! This won’t last long! The water!” Yukina cried out, feet slipping the tighter she tried to hug the wall.

“I know! Just calm down!” he yelled back, looking over the area again for any means to defend themselves. Damn trials taking away their defenses one at a time until they reached this horrifying place… Without the jagan to see the creature, his dragon to obliterate it and even his sword to cut it to pieces, he was bereft of any chance at seizing the offensive. There was only one option, and that was still to escape this corridor.

With Yukina’s whimper growing more desperate and the water nearly reaching their barely qualified havens of safety atop the ledges, Hiei spotted what looked to be the remains of a small table floating nearby. “Yukina, I’m going to distract it and then you run. I’ll be right behind you.”

“Brother, you-!”

“Do as I say!!” He didn’t give her the luxury of argument and jumped back into the water, surprising even the creature as he reached for the floating table, hurling it as close to the entrance as possible so that Yukina had more escape time than did the monster.

Panting and scared for her brother’s life, Yukina obeyed Hiei’s command and leapt back into the depths, willing her legs to keep going forward. Slowed down by the weight of the water now soaking her clothes, she pulled and trudged, meanwhile hearing Hiei struggle from behind her. She chanced a look in the opposite direction, relieved to see that he was indeed trailing her, but so was the menace chasing them.

Only her conscious mind could force her to keep moving, all other types of thought vanishing under the cloak of fear as she heard Hiei cry out and lag behind suddenly. She grabbed onto his hand and pulled him with her, her sense of smell detecting the aroma of blood, but she shook off the assumption, trying to focus on their escape.

As the beast continued to snarl and hiss, having stopped for a moment, munching on the flesh it had ripped from Hiei’s body, Yukina looked ahead and saw a door beckoning her to open it. At the same time, the twins also stopped briefly, having noticed that the water was rapidly receding, but that notion spurred the creature as well and it hissed loudly to call for its next meal.

Hiei only felt his heart pounding when he pushed Yukina towards the door. “Fucking run!!! GO!”

Yukina ignored the slimy texture of the handle when she grabbed onto it and pulled with all her might to open it. But just as she had snaked through, the door shut before Hiei could follow her. “Hiei!!” She tried fruitlessly to re-open it, hearing him bang against it while the creature’s snarling increased to levels of unmatched proportions.

When the banging stopped and only the monster’s sounds of feasting could be heard, Yukina crumbled to her knees, hands splayed against the door as she wept. The Trial of Fear was more than just facing a nightmare – it was one of waking up from it and discovering that she was still trapped and at its mercy.
