Only Sin
“So even Death has sinned now. And up until this moment I truly thought perhaps one of you was really as perfect as you claim…” Lucifer toyed mindlessly with his precious prey. Quite a sight to have the mighty Angel of Death at his mercy, cut and torn to pieces in the grass where his dark deed was done.
“Not one man is perfect on this earth.” Alexander grimaced, fumbling to cover the wound in his side.
“I can see that, but I always knew it, too.” Lucifer replied in kind, smiling as he kicked Death again, sending him rolling a bit to one side. “I heard that Michael killed a man – your most feared sin. What was his punishment?”
Alexander didn’t feel the need to answer. Lucifer knew everything of the suffering of mankind, even those that could not die, but delighted in causing them to fear the pain that would precede it.
“Practical crucifixion is what I heard…” Lucifer went on, picking up a stone from nearby. Its weight was a little too much for his hand, so he threw it at the Angel, the impact landing in the younger man’s back. “To my understanding, that sort of punishment has never been carried out since the beginning of the Trinity Kingdom. Why, that sounds downright dreadful and cruel, don’t you think?”
“Michael… Michael killed out of need. He wanted to protect someone…” Alexander groaned out, his eyes shut for fear of dust being kicked into them again. “He loved her enough to endure that agony for her.”
Lucifer snickered and tediously ran the very tip of his sword along Alexander’s arm, leaving a thin stripe of blood in its wake. “Just as you loved her enough to merit yourself a similar punishment, Death. I’m surprised that you took such initiative with her of all women.”
Alexander whimpered inwardly, chastising himself for doing what he did just days ago, but how did Lucifer know? What a foolish question to ask – of course Lucifer knew of his sin. The Devil thrived on these moments, digging into the weakest points of one’s heart and leaving it beaten and bloodied before he would seek entertainment elsewhere. It made sense for him to take advantage of an Angel when his spirit was vulnerable all because of one woman who opened a new door, only to have it trampled upon by a man too cruel to be alive.
“So… did you hold her? Did you caress her skin, my boy? Was she soft to the touch, or was she rough and calloused like the bark of a tree?” Lucifer taunted, continuing to run the edge of his blade along Alexander’s arm.
Had this been another man inquiring of his behaviors, Alexander would have answered with a full heart, but curiosity was replaced by cruelty and a viciousness beyond comprehension. He wanted to say that though she was quiet and never made a sound, she felt wonderful and free beneath him, as if she were releasing a part of herself that was contained like a bird. Her skin was soft and pleasing to touch, and it invigorated him too much to the point that his feelings went too far.
Lucifer snickered again. “If only my dear Reiko were here to see this. I dare say he would have more fun torturing you than I would. As her brother, he would break you in two just for looking at her, much less taking away her virgin spirit.”
As he almost always did when faced with adversity and grief, Alexander wept quietly, but spoke admirably amidst the Devil’s glory, “Is it so wrong for a man to love a woman sincerely? Should a man be condemned to this sort of suffering because he gave the girl he wants to help a piece of himself so that perhaps she would smile again? What is it that drives men like you to exploit the weaknesses of others?”
“You ask too many questions, Death.” Lucifer kicked Alexander once more and then took his sword to the boy’s throat, leaving faint red marks on the flesh as he continued. “Men like me do what we do because we delight in seeing pain in one’s eyes and body, but you get pleasure another way… And I’m sure when you had her in this very spot, trapped beneath you, she wanted to scream, but you gave her no such freedom. She was yours to take and you didn’t care if it hurt or not.”
“How dare you accuse me of taking her by force!” Alexander shouted, trying to fight back, but the proximity of the blade prevented him from moving at all. “Reia let me have her willingly. She did not struggle or cry for one’s help.”
“Ha! Deny it all you want, but that’s the reason you’re on the bottom right now and I’m on top with all the advantage I need.” Lucifer replied, his grin sinister and without any sense of comfort. “Rapists are just as terrible as murderers, and for an Angel, you can only imagine all that I have planned for you tonight. You will bleed more than any other man, and amazingly enough, you’ll live to tell about it. Won’t that be nice, Death?”
Alexander bit his lip and let his head roll to the side, defeated. There was no escape from this.
