Brian walks into the hospital. He doesn't run, oh no. He's too calm for that. He goes in the direction of ER. He knows the way all too well and he wishes he didn't.
He sees the receptionist and clears his throat upon approaching the desk.
The woman looks up, a scowl on her face and Brian sighs. He just knows she'll be trouble. "I need information on Justin Taylor."
"Immediate family only." She says, voice monotone.
"He's my partner." Brian says through clenched teeth.
Her voice is now snobbish as she says condescendingly, "Doesn't count sir."
Brian slaps the desk. "Listen here lady—"
"Is there a problem here?"
Brian looks up, relieved to see Doctor Richard.
"Yes there is doctor." The girl smirks as she glances at Brian. "This man won't leave even though I say immediate family only. He thinks just because he fucks Taylor that he has a right to see the patient."
Doctor Richard frowns. "Ms. Anderson, I'm appalled at your behavior. Brian holds Justin's power of attorney.
"Well, he didn't tell me that." She crosses her arms defensively.
"I very much doubt you gave him the chance. You need to work on that attitude of yours or you will be out of a job. Leave your prejudice at the door."
Doctor Richard motions Brian to follow him. Before Brian follows the doctor's orders, he glances at the girl. "Ms. Anderson? I'm unsurprised by the fact that you're not married."
She flushes an angry red as Brian smiles before catching up to the doctor.
They walk side by side for a moment.
"Justin, is he—"
The doctor puts a hand on Brian's shoulder. "Justin will be completely fine. It was an allergic reaction, but he's stable and conscious now."
Brian feels confused. "Justin is always very careful when it comes to his allergies. It's not like him to put himself in the hospital because he eats something he shouldn't have."
They arrive at the hospital room. When they enter, Justin gives a smile, but it's more subdued, doesn't have the normal sunshine magnitude.
"What did you eat?" Brian's voice is firm.
"Relax Brian. It wasn't a known allergy. I've discovered I'm allergic to papayas."
"The fruit?" Brian's left eyebrow arches."
"No, the clothing. Of course the fruit." Justin rolls his eyes.
"No smart-alecky comments Sunshine. Where did you get papayas from?"
"Daphne. Listen Brian, how was I supposed to know I'd be allergic? It's not like I ever had them before. I know I'm allergic now, so I'll never eat them again. No harm done."
Brian massages his forehead, feeling a headache coming on. "No harm done? Do you have any ideas what I was thinking when I got the call from the hospital."
Justin's eyes soften. "I'm sorry you were worried, but I'm fine. Now, I want a kiss." When Brian doesn't move, Justin crosses his arms. "I'm lying in a hospital bed. I want a kiss so you better give me a kiss."
Brian bends down, pressing a chaste kiss to Justin's lips. "Better?"
Justin smiles. "I guess, but it would have been better if it was longer."
"Too bad for you." Brian murmurs. He stands straight, looking at the doctor who has an amused expression on his face. "When is he getting out of here?"
The doctor looks at the clipboard. "Tomorrow morning. He's technically fine now, but I want to keep him here for observation to make sure he doesn't have any more attacks."
"Okay, looks like I'm sleeping over then."
Doctor Richards nods. "I'll have someone make up the second bed for you."
When the doctor leaves, Brian takes Justin's hands as he sits next to the bed. They stay silent, basking in the warmth and comfort of a simple handhold.
