Prompt #5 - Arcade

Despite a stupid laptop breaking down I did manage to make it!

Title: Explanations
Fandom: btvs
Pairing: Spike/Xander
Prompt: Arcade
Warnings: slash, m/m
Rating: R
Summary: Xander wins a bet but it doesn't go like he expected

Xander was pleased with himself. For once he had managed to outsmart Spike. That didn't happen too often so it made him very happy that he had succeeded. The whole thing had started with Xander, once more, asking Spike if he was going to get to fuck Spike anytime. They had been together for some time now and it was always Spike topping. It wasn't like Xander objected to Spike fucking him but in his opinion it would have been nice to offer him a chance to top sometimes too. Occasionally he tried asking Spike if they could do it the other way around but Spike always came up with some excuse or a challenge Xander had no chances of winning. This time Spike had made a mistake. His challenge had been that Xander should win him in some game. Spike's mistake had been that he hadn't specified the game but had given the choice to Xander thinking that he couldn't come up with a game he wasn't able to win. That was how they had ended up at the arcade.

When Xander had told Spike which game he had chosen the vampire had protested pretty loudly. Xander was sure it was because Spike wasn't sure about him being able to win anymore but a bet was a bet and finally Xander had been able to convince Spike to accept it. He really wanted to win so he had picked a game he had played most of his childhood and even after that. He did realize that Spike's vampire senses and reflexes gave him an unfair edge but he was also certain that with his years of experience he would be able to win Spike pretty easily. He knew that this would be his one and only chance for a long time to gain the right to fuck Spike. He couldn't understand what the big deal was with Spike wanting to top always and he wanted his turn trying that out. That gave him even more determination to win the game.

Spike was grumbling the whole way to the arcade and even when they were already inside. At first Xander had taken it with humor and thought that Spike was just putting on a show for him. When the grumbling just went on he started to worry. Some grumbling he could have understood but now he started to suspect that this wasn't just a show for his benefit but Spike really was upset. They circled the arcade for some time before Xander couldn't take it anymore. He pulled Spike to stand into a private corner.

"Spike, why are you like this?" Xander was worried but also a bit hurt. "Is it so terrible thought for you that I might win and according to our bet I get to fuck you? Is there something wrong with me? Am I not good enough?"

"Pet, it's not that. I just..."

Xander expected Spike to continue but the silence just went on. Now Xander was hurting really bad. It was obvious Spike really disliked the idea of Xander fucking him and wasn't able to give him a good reason for it. There was just one conclusion he could make from that. It had something to do with him. All the happiness he had experienced before disappeared into nothing. Suddenly he didn't feel like playing any games anymore or more precisely he didn't feel like doing anything anymore. He just wanted to go home and be miserable all by himself. He was barely able to speak.

"Let's go home. I don't feel like being here anymore."

The walk home was done in complete silence. To Xander it seemed that Spike tried to open his mouth a few times to say something but nothing ever came out. Then they were already at their house. In the apartment Xander headed straight for the bedroom and closed the door behind him. He sort of hoped that there would be a lock in it but he also knew that if Spike wanted to come into the room he wouldn't care if it was locked or not. He just hoped that Spike would leave him alone for now. He didn't think he could look at him right now. He hurt too much. Xander spent a few hours alone in the room wallowing in his despair. He couldn't understand how a night he had waited for such a long time had transformed into a nightmare.

Xander knew it was getting late and he would have to do some decision about sleeping arrangements soon. He really didn't feel like being cuddled by Spike the way they used to sleep like so that left him with just one choice. With a heavy heart he collected Spike's pillow and blanket and carried them into the living room. He found Spike sitting there in one of the lounge chairs with a beer in his hand. He just dumped the pillow and blanket on the sofa and turned around with intention to return to the bedroom when Spike's voice stopped him.

"Pet?"

"Not now, Spike." Xander didn't turn around. "I really don't have energy for this."

Then he went back to the bedroom and dropped on the bed. He was feeling truly miserable. He felt even worse when he heard the apartment door opening and closing. It seemed Spike had gone out. Xander had no idea if the vampire planned to return or if this was it. Could it really be that their relationship would end like this? Tears started to stream from Xander's eyes and he wiped at them angrily. He didn't want to cry. He didn't even know why he was crying. Of course it was possible that Spike had just walked out of their relationship for good. Then there was the fact that Xander had really been hurt by Spike's actions. He buried his head into the pillows and let the tears come. At some point he managed to fall asleep.

Some time later Xander woke up when he heard the door going again. It seemed Spike had returned. Of course he had no way of knowing if the vampire planned to stay or if he had returned just to retrieve his belongings. He tried to listen in case he heard any sounds that might give him an idea what Spike was doing but there was just silence. Then suddenly he heard steps coming closer to the bedroom door and then there was a knock.

"Luv? Can I come in?"

Xander stayed silent and pretended to sleep. Maybe if Spike thought he was asleep he might go away. His heart was beating with fast speed while he waited to hear Spike's steps going away.

"Pet, I can hear your heart galloping and know you are awake. Just answer me."

Xander sighed. He really didn't want to talk but knew that they had to do it at some point. Maybe he could get some sleep after that.

"Fine, come on in."

The door was opened very carefully and Spike peaked in. He looked like he expected Xander to throw something at him which amused Xander a little. Spike entered the room and stood at the end of the bed looking like there were quite a few places where he would have preferred being in compared to the current situation. Xander waited Spike to say the first words since he had been the one to approach Xander so he probably had something to say. There was a small amount of fear in Xander's brain of what that something was. Maybe Spike was there to tell him that it was over. He tried not to think about it and concentrated on waiting.

"Pet, can I come to lie beside you on the bed? It would be more easier to talk like that."

"Yeah." Xander said. Maybe he wouldn't have to look at Spike's face while they talked. It might make it easier. "Climb on."

Spike still moved really slowly and got on the bed. Xander longed to cuddle him because he was feeling quite lost at the moment but since Spike was the reason for him being upset he couldn't seek comfort there. He just waited what Spike had to say.

"Xander, there is something I want to tell you."

Xander's fear jumped a few notches upwards. Spike never called him by his whole name. It was always Xan, luv or pet. He didn't think Spike had ever used his name while talking to him. It had to be something bad.

"I don't know how much you know about sire/childe relationships in general or about my relationship with Angel but I guess there are some things I need to tell you now. I probably should have talked about this already before but didn't know how."

Xander was all ears now. He really didn't know much about vampire family life and Spike's relationship with Angel had never been a good one according to his knowledge. Every time they talked they seemed to end up arguing. He didn't know what Spike's relationship with Angel had to do with their situation but he was ready to listen.

"Angel is the only male who has ever topped me."

Xander did a double take at that. He hadn't even known that Spike and Angel had been involved like that. True that a revelation like that wasn't something you could just drop at a dinner discussion or something but still Xander hoped he had been told about it earlier.

"It was something that was fully expected of him and my job was to submit to him. This is where it gets tricky. According to the vampire lore I should only submit to my Sire and other elders of the family. If I were to give the control over to you and let you top me it would go against the lore and it isn't something I can do even if I'm not living according to the traditions that much."

"That's stupid!" Xander interrupted. "You mean to tell me that I can never top you because of some ancient vampire rule?"

"Pet, it's not that black and white. If we were ever to be mated it would change things. Then we would become equal partners and it wouldn't matter anymore who would do the topping."

"So I'm below you somehow at the moment?" Xander was beginning to get angry again. "I'm somehow inferior to you?"

"No, pet. That is not what I meant. I didn't want to tell you about this earlier because I was afraid you wouldn't understand."

"What's there for me to understand? You can't let me top because I'm not good enough according to some rule someone has come up with ages ago."

"Xander, I would love to be able to feel you inside me. I would give anything if that was possible."

"So what's stopping you? What's this mating thing you mentioned? Why can't we do that?"

"Pet, mating is serious business. It's not something you can walk away from after it's done. I would also need to get approval from Angel to take you as my mate. Then there are some rituals that need to be gone through."

"Like what?" Spike mumbled something Xander couldn't hear. He did suspect he heard Angel's name there but that's all. "Care to repeat that? I didn't hear you?"

"I need to let Angel fuck you."

Xander was up from the bed in an instant and pacing along the bedroom floor.

"You have to let Angel do what to me? You can't be serious!"

"Pet, that's how it goes. Part of the ritual for me to take you as my mate is to let my Sire take you."

Xander paced along the floor for some time in silence. He could feel Spike's eyes following him but the vampire wasn't saying anything.

"So what else there is?"

"That's the hardest part of it. Then there is me biting you and drinking some of your blood and then you drinking a small amount of my blood to strenghten the bond. There are some ritual words to bind us together. It's nothing complicated."

"So I need to drink your blood? Will that harm me in some way? Will I change?"

"There have been rumours of faster healing, better eyesight and hearing but nothing is set in stone. It's pretty rare for a vampire to take a human mate."

Xander returned to lie on the bed and turned to face Spike.

"Do you want to?"

"Yes. I've been wanting that already for some time. I was afraid to talk about it in case you didn't feel the same. I was also afraid of mentioning the part Angel has to have in this. I know you hate him."

"I don't actually hate him. I've left that behind me. It was mainly me being jealous of Buffy. Of course that doesn't mean I'm comfortable with the thought of Angel getting to fuck me."

"I can understand that, pet. Let's give it a few weeks. You can think about what you feel and then we will discuss it further. If you want to do it I will contact Angel and discuss the details with him."

A silence landed in the bedroom once more. Xander was deep in his thoughts. He still felt rejected and found it weird that some vampire lore was the only thing stopping him from topping Spike. He was shaken from his thoughts when Spike got up from the bed.

"I guess I will leave you alone now so that you can catch some sleep. I'll see you in the morning."

For a few seconds Xander was confused by Spike's words. Then he realized that he had been pretty clear about wanting to sleep alone that night and taken Spike's pillow and blanket to the living room. Spike was already at the door when Xander finally got his mouth open.

"Spike! Why don't you just go grab your things and join me in bed. I would like you to hold me during the night. It makes me feel safe."

Xander managed to catch the pleased expression on Spike's face before it was hid away. The vampire dashed out of the room and was back with his pillow and blanket after a few moments. Then they were already cuddled in the middle of the bed. Xander sighed happily and pressed himself against Spike a bit more. All his hurt wasn't gone yet and he was sure it might take some time but this was a start. He had some decisions to make but they could wait until the morning.
