"Hey, don't touch it !" Nodin protested, reaching nervously for the wooden box Kristin had taken from one of the shelves. The woman had already opened it though, and sneezed when it let escape a small cloud of a pearly white dust. The shopman grabbed the box and closed it quickly, helding it far from their face. Putting it back on its place, he casted a nasty look at Kristin, who has still itching her nose.

"Stupid woman", he hissed, never dropping his eyes. "You think you can behave in a magic shop the same way you do in a cheap jewellery ? Some of this artifacts are powerful, way more than you can imagine !"

"What happened, Nodin ?" Intrigued by the shopkeeper's venemous tone, Gervald had turned from the herbory closet he was studying, and was now coming towards them. Kristin, who hadn't moved nor spoken since Nodin had fetched the box, lifted fearful eyes to him.

The dry and grey shopman sighed, full of disdain. "This cow" (he threw an angry look at Kristin, who opened her mouth to protest, only to shut it down again) "has inhaled fairy dust. You shouldn't bring women in here if they can't behave themselves properly."

Ignoring his last comment, Gervald reached for Kristin and looked at her in the eyes. "How are you feeling ?", he asked, concern peeking in his voice.

"Good ... I feel good", she nearly whispered, a little freaked out by all this agitation. She had just inhaled a little dust. What could it possibly do to her ? She was tempted to believe it was harmless, but the look in her gardian's eyes told her otherwise. "Can you tell me what's happening here ?"

"You absorbed fairy dust." From Gervald's serious tone, she knew it was big deal. "Its effect varies from one use to another. All we can do for now, is wait and see what happens to you." The old man calmy leaded her to a cushy armchair, and made her sit down. "Nodin", he called out for the shopkeeper, who was making sur she hadn't touched anything else while whispering to himself about the carelessness of women. "We must stay here until the effects of the dust show themselves. May you bring us some tea, please ?"

The shopkeeper went for the back shop, still muttering against all female kind. As soon as they were alone, Kristin, getting over the fear and surprise that had first seized her, tried to assess her situation. "Can you tell me what's going on, now. I mean, the whole thing, not just some vague indications about this powder I breathed." All traces of doubt and hesitation had disappear from her face, showing now only determination and interest. Gervald took place in the armchair next to hers, folding his hands in front of his chest, elbows on the arms of the seat.

"This powder you breathed is made of crushed fairy wings. It's a rare and powerful compound for a lot of witchcrafting. It's always used with other ingredients that can stabilized it, because on its own, it's a highly fickle element. When absorbed alone by living creatures, it produces impredictable effects. Lists have been made of this effects over the centuries, but some new ones keep appearing nowadays. Since you haven't taken a lot of it, we can hope the effects on you will be light, and quickly over." He unfolded his hand, and his mouth twisted in a funny face. "All we can do now is wait."

"You don't seem worried about it. What if I turn into a gigantic human-crow ?" Kristin commented sarcastically, yet reassured by her guardian's calm tone. If he was cool about it, then it should be less severe than it seemed. Or there was nothing they can do about it, and she was doomed. But she didn't want to think about this possibility.

Gervald smiled lightly, his eyes lightening up in amusement. "Then I'll have to buy a gigantic bird cage. At least you'll cost me at lot less in clothing and shoes."
