A/N: Part of the Well-Spring series.
Buffy stared off into nowhere as she slowly chewed her shawarma. She had never had the spiced meat before, but it was surprisingly good. Although that may have partially been due to the fact that she was exhausted and starving. The battle that day had been much longer than the ones she was used to and even with her enhanced Slayer abilities, she found herself more worn out than usual.
Around her the Avengers were quietly eating their own food and nearly as slowly as she was, with the exception of Thor, who was sitting next to her. He was still eating with more energy than the rest of them combined. Steve sat at one end of the table with his head resting on his fist and she wasn't positive, but she believed he had dozed off at some point.
She had been surprised that the entire group of them hadn't immediately begun to question her once Loki had temporarily been placed into SHIELD's custody. They sort of just shuffled off to the restaurant Tony had seen during the battle and fell into eating. She had barely been introduced to the ones she hadn't 'met' while fighting the Chitauri.
In all fairness, the group had apparently been dealing with this problem for several days before it culminated into that day's battle. She was intimately familiar with being on high alert for days and the subsequent crash. At first believing that she was too energized from the battle to rest any time soon, only to pass out an hour later.
The group had quietly welcomed her when Steve had all but insisted that she joined them for the meal. Natasha, the redhead, was the only one who had looked at her in a way that made her feel uneasy. Buffy had never seen her before in any of her dreams or the archer, Clint, who sat next to the redhead. While Natasha seemed to be suspicious of her, if her body language was anything to go by, she hadn't said anything to the others or her. She tended to keep her attention focused on Clint. Buffy was sure there was a story there, but she didn't want to pry.
She took a quick look next to her and while Thor was still focused on eating, a shadow was creeping into his eyes. All of the day's trouble had been caused by his brother, and while she knew he had to have been elated by finding his previously lost brother, it had been seriously tempered by the anger and jealousy that ate at Loki's soul. She really wanted to wrap her arms around him in silent comfort as she had done so many times before, but she was no longer a phantom in the shadows.
Buffy was finding that the most difficult task of the day hadn't been fighting off the aliens, but reminding herself that these people didn't know her like she knew them. She had grown accustomed to providing silent support in these mens' lives and it was now taken away from her. Being physically present in their world she was going to have to find a way to insinuate herself into their lives without being obvious about it. Hopefully standing by them during today's battle was a step in the right direction.
Again, her eyes drifted to the far end of the table where Steve sat, the only movement from him was the occasional drop of his head as he fought off sleep. She couldn't seem to keep her gaze off of him. All that time she had spent with him as he struggled to adjust to this new time she developed a huge soft spot for the man. Not that she didn't care for the other three she had been sent to, but something about him touched her deep inside. Then fighting alongside him today had been amazing and she hoped it wouldn't be the last time.
Her gaze tracked over the battle weary group. While helping out today was going to be a boon in becoming a fixture in their lives, it wasn't going to be easy.
