Of all the students in the high school, the one to come to Jared's rescue had to be Jensen Ackles. Jared pulls the uneven straps of his book bag over his shoulders and weaves through the kids clogging the hall, rushing to get to Miss Smith's room on the other side of the building before bell rings again. He manages to duck into the room and slide into his desk in the back just in time.
“Cuttin' it close, Pada-freak,” Ben Robertson whispers harshly as he leans into the aisle under the guise of digging a pen out of the pocket of his North Face backpack. “Musta got caught up talkin' to all your friends... Oh, wait. You don't have any friends. Loser.”
Jared keeps his eyes on the front of the classroom where Miss Smith picks up a pile of papers from the corner of her desk that are probably their graded book reports from last week. It's hard to ignore Ben, but Jared doesn't want to let his classmate see how much his hurtful words – no matter how true they are – affect him, especially after what just happened.
Miss Smith comes down his row and sets Jared's report on top of his desk, tapping his grade with her fingernail. “Great job, Jared.”
Nodding wordlessly, Jared flips the papers over to hide the big, red A at the top next to his name, and shoves it into the front of his notebook away from prying eyes. Regardless, Ben stills scoffs, “Suck up.”
After handing back the last book report, Miss Smith returns to the front of the room and starts writing on the whiteboard with her neat cursive.
Slouching in his seat, Jared takes notes as she talks and tries not to let his mind wander to Jensen. No one's ever stuck up for him, much less interfered when he's been bullied. Jared's pretty sure that if Jensen hadn't gotten there when he did, Mark probably would have pushed him right over the side of the roof. Mark's bullying has been escalating lately – the last time they crossed paths, Jared left the nurse's office with two black eyes and a broken nose after telling a lie about tripping over his shoelaces – but Jared was kind of expecting a broken arm or something this time. He wonders how bad it's going to be next time. Jensen intervening was a fluke, an aberration.
Mark will probably try to finish what he started and he'll probably succeed. Jared should just save him the trouble, do it himself and get it over with instead of waiting and wondering when. After school, maybe. He can hang out in the library until Miss Sampson makes him leave, then it's just a matter of getting past Fred and Sterling, the janitors, and making his way up to the roof. If he waits long enough, the school'll be empty and it's not like his foster parents are gonna come looking for him.
Nobody'll find him until the morning, probably one of the janitors when they unlock the building, or Principal Beaver, depending on where he jumps from. It might not be until lunch if he jumps off the edge of the roof on the side of the building that wraps around the quad. His body could lay there for hours outside the cafeteria windows. Maybe days. And no one would miss him. He'd just be marked down as absent when he didn't show up to class and no one would know until they found him.
The bell rings shrilly, interrupting Jared's thoughts, and it's hard to believe class is already over. He must've tuned out half-way through whatever Miss Smith was talking about because his notes turned into dark, spiraling doodles.
He lingers back while everyone else packs up their things to go to their next class and is the last one out the door.
“Hey,” a voice says from behind him, scaring him so bad he nearly trips over his feet in his haste to turn around. But it's just Jensen. “Sorry,” he says, holding up his hands.
Jared ducks his head down and glances around through the straggly bangs that hang over his eyes, making sure nobody can see him talking to Jensen. He'd hate for Jensen, who seems like such a nice person, become a target for Mark's bullying just because he's talking Jared. But no one's looking. Yet. Ignoring Jensen completely, Jared turns back around and heads towards his next class.
But Jensen's not giving up easily. “Jared,” he says, catching up and matching stride, dodging other students as they work their way down the hall. “Are you okay?”
“Yeah, fine,” Jared bites out, keeping his gaze locked forward.
“You don't- you don't look fine. I'll go with you to talk to Ms. Rhodes after school if-”
“What?” Jared squeaks, finally meeting Jensen's eyes. “No. Why would I- I'm fine. I don't need to talk to Ms. Rhodes.”
Jensen laughs in disbelief. “Are you kidding me? Jared. Mark tried to push you off the roof.”
“I know. I was there.”
“Then why won't you...” He shakes his head. “Jesus Christ, Jared. He could've killed you.”
“So? What do you care? You don't know me. It's none of your business.”
“Then... Maybe I'll just make it my business. I'll go to Ms. Rhodes right now.”
“And maybe I'll just go up to the roof myself and finish what Mark tried to do,” Jared threatens.
Jensen shakes his head again, visibly horrified. “Jared...”
“You're gonna be late for class,” Jared says and pulls open the door to Mr. Fuller's classroom. He glances at Jensen through the glass for half a second before he has to turn away.
Where was Jensen last year when all of this started? It's too late for anybody to help Jared now.
