Summary: “I’ve brought cakes,” boomed the strong voice of Kay as he entered the room of the Round Table fifteen minutes later.

Arthur looked silently around him, letting the murmur of dozens of male voices fill the room. He felt proud of the knights he has been able to unite around this table. They were all fighting for justice and peace in the kingdom instead of fighting one another. They were making his dream come true as they discovered friendship was stronger than hate, and that they had all more in common than a land.

As his gaze fell upon the empty chair next to him he sighed. Kay was missing, late again. He wanted to wait for him but he couldn't delay the meeting any longer. He had already waited fifteen minutes. The reunion would have to start without him. Again. He raised to his feet, scrambling the chair on the floor to bring silence around him.

All heads turned to him at once, all conversation dropped. Their eyes were full of attention and eagerness. The meeting was about to start.

“I’ve brought cakes,” boomed the strong voice of Kay as he entered the room of the Round Table fifteen minutes later.

All heads turn to him.

“You’re late again,” sighed Arthur.

“Yeah, but I’ve brought cakes,” repeated the seneschal while placing the tray on the table.

“Cakes you haven’t baked I gather,” commented Bedivere sarcastically.

“Maybe…,” he replied biting into one of the sweet. “Anyway, what did I miss?”

“We were discussing the problem of lateness to the meetings of the round table,” pointed Arthur, his gaze hard upon Kay.

“Ah,” was all the seneschal could reply as he sat in his chair. “Well, I promise not to be late again. What’s next?”

Arthur shook his head. He knew it was useless to argue with Kay. The older man would always treat him as a younger brother and would never fully accept his authority as a king. Arthur really didn’t mind. He liked having people like Kay around, people who didn’t care that he was king and didn’t want anything from him. His only worry was about the other knights. He wasn’t sure they could accept Kay’s rough behaviour for much longer.

He coughed slightly before speaking again. “Alright… next we listen to Yvain’s report from the North.”

Yvain started speaking and Arthur stopped listening. Instead he surveyed the company around the table, looking for any resentment towards the seneschal but as he watched them, he could see the tray of cakes going fast from hand to hand. As long as Kay would bring cakes, things would be alright, he thought and reported his attention back to Yvain’s tale.
