Title: Stormy Weather
Author: naughty_bangles
Rating: Gen
Summary: Kathy has to face the last step of her apprenticeship.
"A storm is coming", William said in his best Ned Stark impersonation.
Kathy chuckled and put her coffee mug on the dining table. She went to the window, observing the black clouds and the grey curtain of rain in the distance. It wouldn't be long before it was on their house. The landscape arounf them was already dark, even if it was only the beginning of the afternoon.
"The weather man said it wouldn't be long", she mused, trying to make the lightnings out from the moving clouds. "I hope it will be enough."
William came to stand beside her. "If it's not, we'll find a bigger one", he stated, raising his shoulders.
Kathy kept staring out of the window for a minute more, completely silent. Storms weren't an oddity in this corner of the world, quite the opposite. William was right ; if this one didn't suit her, they would find another one quickly. Or, better, another one would find its way to their rented house. She just hoped the next one wouldn't be too big.
"Shall we go ?"
William's voice shook her out if her trail of thoughts. They ought to be outside soon, or they would miss it.
"Yes, we shall." She smiled at her boyfriend. He fetched their raincoats and held hers out. Kathy shook her head. "I'm not taking it. It better to have as few obstacles as possible between oneself and the elements", she replied, pulling a face. "It would have been even better to go out totally naked, but my commitment only goes so far."
"That's too bad", William replied jockingly, laughing at the killer glare she threw him. He had been amazingly supportive since the beginning of her apprenticeship, and she thanked him for that, but it didn't mean she was willing to let him make fun of her so easily. She would have her revenge later, she promised herself.
Still chuckling silently, William put his raincoat on, and opened the door, gesturing excessively for her to go out of the house. Kathy took a deep breath and, graping the sides of her long dress in both her fists, she passed the entrance.
The rain had already started, soaking her hair and clothes in less than a minute. Kathy shivered, wind blowing with force through her wet garments, but didn't stop walking. Behind her, she could feel Williams' presence, quiet and reassuring. He would be there if she had any problem during this storm trip. And he woud be able to take care of her when she would catch the flu from so much rain and wind.
She walked down the little stone alley that stayed in front of the house, till she reached the grassy part of the garden. She moved a few steps forward before stopping and standing still. That was a really good spot for what she wanted to do. She kicked her shoes away, annoyed at the fact she didn't think to let them inside the house, and afraid she would catch more than a simple flu. But she had to have faith. All of it would be useless if she didn't have faith.
She saw Williams picking up her shoes from the corner of her eye, just before she closed them and try to relax. Breath. That was the more important. Breath, and feel Nature's power going through you, filling your every cell. Facing Nature's wrath was the last step into the sorcerer apprenticeship.
What's a little flu compared to Nature's most garded secrets ?
