Summary: It was the year 1654 and she and Agathe had just fled from their families.
It was the middle of the night in Bretonvilleres. Everyone was asleep after a long day of work in the fields, in the farms, in the shops, and for a very few in offices. Anna wasn't asleep though. She laid in bed, resting on her back, her eyes wide open. Agathe was sleeping soundly next to her her flaming red hair a mere shade of grey in the darkness surrounding them. She could barely distinguish anything around her. The rays of lights from the moon were too feeble to light up her world. It was disconcerting, and for a moment Anna was lost in time. It was the year 1654 and she and Agathe had just fled from their families. Summer was in usually bloom and with the disguise of short hairs and men's clothes, they had started to travel together, building a life on the road for them. Most often they would sleep under the stars or in barns, but once in a while, when they could afford it, they would sleep in a tavern that offered beds for wandering men. The rooms would always be the same. In 2013, in the darkness and silence of the countryside, Anna could believe she was back in time. She could hear the distant bell tower of the church striking one o'clock. It was the only means to tell the time when no lights were available. Anna closed her eyes and took a deep breath. She could smell the earthy perfume of Agathe. It was 1852 and she had just found Agathe in this century. They would run into alleys, hide in their bedrooms, escape in the empty countryside and they would cling to each other, taking in their smells, tasting each other hungrily, and discovering their bodies once more. Anna opened her eyes. It was 2013 and she had to remind herself of that fact. It was always too easy to lose herself on the loop of their story. There was so many memories, so many similarities and signs she would always seek out, need and devour. If she wasn't careful she could lose her mind, mix the centuries together and blend them all in one place, one time.
She rolled to her side and placed her hand on Agathe's naked shoulder. She could feel the scar descending on her arm from an accident on her parents' farm when she had been eight years old. This had never been there in any other lifetime. She kissed it gently and curled up against Agathe's body, her hand resting firmly on the scar. She needed it to anchor herself into the present, break the loop of memories and remember that for now, in the 21st century, her life was linear, going from her birth to her death. The memories were just that - memories of times gone by, times she would never get back, that could never get her back.<\lj-cut>
