Summary: The Orkney brothers get ready to depart for Camelot.
Gawain stood erect by the window, next to Gareth's place in the bed. He could see the faintest line of light starting to rise in the horizon. It was time to go. He could hear his brothers still struggling with their bags, trying to pack as much food as they could. It was useless and they would have to hunt anyway but he didn't have the strength to tell them.
"Gawain..." It was the small voice of Gareth calling him weakly from his bed.
Gawain forced his lips into a smile and knelt down.
"Don't wait any longer. I can see the lights too. Soon mother the castle will be awake and it will be too late. And tomorrow..." He didn't finish his sentence. They both knew what tomorrow would bring - their mother would come back from her trip and they would be trapped once more.
"I'm fine," Gareth added with the faintest of smiles.
"No you're not," replied Gawain gently, stroking his youngest brother's hair away from his eyes.
"I'll be fine though. And someone needs to stay for mother."
Gawain didn't reply. He knew it was the excuse that Gareth needed to remain this strong. His dreams wouldn't be realised, he would be the one trapped in this castle in the north while the rest of them would enjoy a life of glory in Camelot, by Arthur's side at the Round Table.
Gareth closed his eyes. Gawain knew the boy wasn't going to fall back asleep now but he understood the message and said nothing.
He stood up, his back straight and head held high.
"Brothers," his voice boomed in the small room to attract the attention of his siblings. Aggravaine, Mordred, and Gaheris all looked at him at once. "Aggravaine, go ready the horses. Mordred, take the bags down to the riverside. Gaheris..." he pause for a second. "...I need you to check the room one last time while I go take the final papers we need from the hall." They all nodded and executed his orders at once.
When Gaheris was left alone with Gareth and went to sit next to his twin. At the shift of the bed, the younger boy opened his eyes and smiled.
"My offer still stand you know," said Gaheris.
Gareth took his brother's hand in his and squeezed it. "I know. But I can't. Speed is essential and if your horse had to carry me too, it would only slow us down. We can't be slowed down."
"I'll be back for you though."
"No you won't," laughed Gareth meekly. "You'll be too busy." His voice suddenly solemn he added, "I'll come."
Gaheris took his twin in his arms and hugged him tight against his chest. "I'll miss you little brother."
"I'll be with you," came the muffled voice of Gareth. As his brother held him tight, he dropped a bracelet he had made for him to keep him safe, to keep him close. "Be safe," he whispered.
As they slowly broke apart, Gareth gently pushed Gaheris away. "Now go before the others think you're a wimp that changed his mind."
"Never," replied Gaheris sticking his tongue out. And with that he was off to join his older brothers to start their journey to Camelot.
