Summary: It was like they were not human anymore but machines set on a mission.
Thomas was wearing nothing else but his swimming suit. He was lying on his back on a small rock a little way away from the shore letting the sun warm his skin. It felt good to feel the rays of the sun on his face. It reminded him he was alive and that there were simple pleasures to be found in life. He was afraid he could forget. His days were mostly spent trapped in the wodden house that stood on the top of the cliff trying to fend off the Regency and Edith. At times he would lose all hope and that was when he knew he needed to escape, to refuel, so he had come to the beach to take a swim, relax, and forget about everything in the present. He missed Rafael and Boris. He missed his band and the concerts they had given. He still had access to a piano in the woodden house but it simply wasn't the same. It never seemed like Elvirah, Jeroen, or Bianca ever really heard him. It was like they were not human anymore but machines set on a mission. They couldn't regain life before they had accomplished their mission, and if they failed they would die.
Thomas opened his eyes and looked up at the woodden house. How did these people even managed to live together? There was a dying broken man that was only fueled by revenge, a scared little girl that was way beyond her depth, a professional cold blooded assassin, and him - an eccentric full of life dandy. It was nothing short of a miracle that they all managed to get along, live, and work together on the destruction of the Regency, of Edith.
"There you are."
Thomas sat up and saw Elvirah walking towards the edge of the sand, her feet not quite readhing the water.
"I needed some air."
"I don't blame you. It can get too intense in there," she tilted her head towards the cliff.
"You don't say," he joked. He looked silently at Elvirah for a long minute. She had just closed her eyes and he thought he could see silent tears falling of her eyes. Or maybe it was just a trick of the light?
He jumped back into the water and swan to shore. He grabbed his towel and went to sit next to Elvirah. They both stared at the horizon.
"Are you alright," he asked softly.
"Yes," she whispered. "I'm glad you're here," she added after a pause.
"I don't know what I'm doing here to be perfectlt honest," he replied regretting his words instantly. He hadn't meant to say it like that.
Elvirah turned her head to look at Thomas. "You keep us sane Thomas. You remind us we're human." Thomas looked at her. "Alive," she finished her eyes locked in his. "And we need that, I need that," she emphasised, correcting herself.
Thomas smiled reassuringly at her and slid his fingers between hers. He kissed her cheek and let her lay against his shoulder. There was no logic in their alliance, no logic in their alignment, but maybe it was why it worked. They all brought something at least one of the other needed and that was all that mattered in the end.
