Prompt #389 Coxswain ~ On the sea ~ naughty_bangles ~ Original
Title: On the sea
Prompt: Prompt 389 - Coxswain
Rating: Gen
"I think we're all in danger of dying", Thedoulf stated matter-of-factly, his eyes fixed on the wreckrages floating right in front of the ship. Whatever had happened in the area recently, it didn't agree with those boats, and now, it was their remnants that might not agree with the ship.
His second glanced toward the boat cemetary. "We're doomed", he added, resignation rising in his voice. "If the Royal Fleet doesn't get us, Death itself will do." His eyes went back on the deck of the ship, where the crew was actively tending to the ship, delaying for as long as possible the moment when they would all join the great Goddess of the Sea in her deathly bed. None of them seemed to have noticed the impediment crossing their path, but it was only a matter of time.
"That's too much speculations, Nalfein", Thedoulf answered, holding the rudder firmly despite the detrimental efforts of the wind. "This situation is indeed critical, but we'll be doomed only if the Mary Sue is pierced by those debris – or the Fleet's cannon, of course."
Nalfein couldn't decide if the ever-present calm of their coxswain was reassuring, or completely unnerving. The man was moving his rudder with the composure and the precision he always deployed whenever they were at sea, without sparing a glance, nor a thought, to their pursuers, as if it was only him and the water in an empty world.
A look at the rear of the boat and he was assured that the Royal Fleet was still chasing them. For what, he didn't know for sure ; it was true they were engaging in barely legal activities from time to time, like many other independant transporters in this part of the world, but nothing that would justify sending an entire fleet after them. Anything that he knew of, at least. There was things about Thedoulf that he didn't know, and one of them might be what the Fleet was after.
The wreckrages were getting too close, now, and the coxswain hadn't made a move to avoid them. Some of the men had noticed, too, and were alerting their mates, wondering if the captain had become blind or insane, and fearing for their lives. Everyone of them knew the sea could be a deadly mistress before they set foot on the boat, but none of them expected to die from simply sailing into the remnants of a brother of misfortune. Nalfein had to yell several times to get them back to work. Yet he knew for sure that their efforts would be useless if they kept going in that direction.
The Fleet was getting closer too. It was only a matter of minutes before they knew what fate awaited them, hanging or drowning.
The Mary Sue made a sudden swerving on the right, meters away from the beginning of the wreckrage field. Thedoulf, looking as cool as before, was maneuvering the boat in a sharp bypass bording the danger zone. The men on the deck held on ropes and edges, trying the keep the ship, and themselves, afloat. Nalfein himself took hold of the barrier at the end of the commanding space.
The Fleet saw the wreckrage at the last moment, having been blinded by the Mary Sue since the beginning of the chase. The first ships wouldn't be able to avoid it, not without someone like Thedoulf at the rudder. The Mary Sue got back on a straight path, pushed by a favourable wind, while their pursuers went straight to their end.
"Reports on our death might have been a bit premature", Thedoulf remarked, a slight smirk almost invisible on his face.
