He watches her every day. He sees the despair in her big, dark eyes that no one else seems to notice. He watches her continuing to work and save lives, sometimes forcibly piecing her family back together, and always, always putting them far above herself. He sees the exhaustion rippling through those windows to her soul and aches to reach out, bring her to him, and make everything better for her, however possible, but he keeps his desires to himself as he knows she would not welcome them.
He watches her every night, too. He watches her appear to shine in her element in the club. He watches her quiet commands send her workers scattering like bees eager to please their queen, and he, too, is eager to please this most beautiful of all Witches whom he has found. She's still not happy, though, even when she's smiling and laughing with her sisters. Death and sorrow still haunt her, and he would do anything to chase them far away from her light.
Anything but what he most wants to do. He yearns to bring her to him every time he sees her, to take her into his arms, shelter her from the darkness of their world with his strength, and kiss her until she at last forgets her sorrows in the passion he knows he could ignite her. But he won't do it. She still doesn't like him, doesn't trust him, and even when she finally does, he knows he is supposed to be with her sister and Piper, unlike Phoebe, would never willingly take her sister's man.
He curses himself for choosing the wrong Halliwell. He curses himself for being unable to protect the one woman whom he truly loves. He curses himself for making the wrong moves and for being so stupid as to not recognize the difference between lust, which he has with Phoebe, and true love, like he wishes he could have with Piper but knows she will never allow.
He watches her especially when she is with the one she claims to love. He makes her laugh so rarely now, and even when she does, her brown eyes still do not dance as they should. Her merriment is temporary at best and far too often forced, and yet Leo does not seem to notice. His top priority as her man and husband should be to make her happy, but the White Lighter is far too concerned with pleasing his Elders. Cole leads Phoebe away from them simply because he can not stand to watch the light in Piper's soul still dying when her husband is present.
The man could do so much for her. He clearly does not deserve her, and yet, neither does Cole. He's done so much wrong, committed so much evil, taken so many lives. He could never deserve some one as sweet, caring, loving, and ultimately good as Piper, and yet, still, he wonders, every time he sees her, could two broken souls find the happiness they both need together? If Leo was out of the picture and Phoebe was gone, could they be happy together?
Could Piper ever truly learn to love him? Cole is well acquainted with the old Beauty and the Beast fairy tale. Piper is every bit the beauty, full of more love and kindness than even the girl in the story possessed. Cole himself is certainly a beast, but he has so little redeemable qualities. Could she ever see pass his darkness? Could she ever learn to love him as Beauty did Beast? Should he even want her to?
He wants her to be happy, but could he really make her happy? Could he lift her up as the Queen she is? He knows he would treat her always as a Queen if she was his and will forever revere her, but could he truly make her happy? The darkness within him destroys everything good and light it touches. Would he destroy her, too?
He doesn't dare pursue her to find out, and besides, he knows still, that any attempt on his part would be thwarted. She's married to an Angel; she would never look at him, a lowly Demon, even if he could make her happy. He knows she will never be his. He aches to make her happy and tries in little ways all day and night long to do whatever he can to make her happy. He helps with her customers, pulls out her chair for her whenever possible, opens doors for her, leaves rose on her desk at work, raves over her cooking as though it is the very nectar of the Gods, brushes her hand when they're working together as long as his maneuver is not something she'll think was done on purpose, helps her stop whatever Demons come, and does any other oddball thing he can find to make her grin along the way without ever letting her suspect the truth.
She can not know he loves her. He can not tell her or show her any better than in the little things he does to help her. She can never know the truth, and yet every time he sees her and the light in her beautiful eyes wavers, each time she embraces her husband and that light in her eyes isn't as bright and joyful as it should be, Cole wonders again. Can two broken souls ever be happy together? He wishes he could know but knows he never will, and so he keeps his truths to himself and continues quietly to cheer her in all the ways he can until he can no longer help her and her sisters for he's taken one of the greatest evils inside of himself, all to protect Piper and her sisters, all to give her a chance at one day being truly happy. Cole is no more, and yet still a spirit lingers, thinking, wondering, Can two broken souls ever be happy together?
