Summary: For Sabrina, rules about mating and woven bangles are stupid.

"He's skilled and smart, rather cunning, but not much daring. Still I think he's courageous, quite a lot from his people's standarts."

Sabrina was picking at the nearly-broken woven bangle around her right wrist, and hadn't listen to a single word Jean had told her for the last five minutes. For the entire time she had been talking about that guy who was about to lose his own bangle, to be precise. Sabrina didn't want to hear about bangles and soulmating right now. The sooner the moment, the less she was eager to see it coming.

From the moment her own bracelet had shown a few torn threads in its delicate weaving, everybody around her had gone crazy, spying the wrist of all the people that came accross their path. When the bangle would be completely broken, it would be time for her to choose a mate for the rest of her life among the one who would have lost the precious yarn jewel around the same time. She wouldn't have a lot of time to make a decision, and so it was common for people in her situation to start looking for potential mates, to get to know them better before having to seal their destinies forever.

Sabrina found the rules stupid. She didn't care about family construction laws, or magically-bound pieces of yarn. She didn't feel ready to give up her independence yet, whatever the person she had in front of her. She resented the stigma and social disadvantages linked to refusing to mate on time, and blamed them for the dozens of unhappy couple she observed around her every day.

And yet she didn't know how to escape it.

"Sabrina, are you listening to me ? I'm trying to help, here", Jean sighed, annoyed at her friend's lack of response.

Jean was an example of what Sabrina didn't want her life to become. She had decided to mate with a family friend she had known forever, and with whom she had always shared a brothely friendship. It turned out early in their life together that he had been in love with her for years, a feeling she had never been able to return. Especially not after she had fully realized she was in fact attracted to women. She was now trying to handle a messy situation as discreetly as possible, because nobody talked about the problems rushed pairing could create. She looked tired all the time, and Sabrina didn't envy her perpetual struggles to maintain the apparences.

"I know, but what do you want me to do ? Spend the next few weeks interviewing every nearly-unwoven in the city ? My boss would love it", she replied, feeling more and more despondent by the minute. "Beside, if first impressions really did give a good idea of what a lifetime with someone would look like, there wouldn't be so many dissatisfied people around."

Jean tightened her lips, then took a sip of her coffee. Sabrina hadn't meant to hurt her, but they both knew Jean's personal life wasn't ad materials for the mating system.

"I'm just saying that maybe a little preparation can spare you the mistakes I've made", she simply said when she put her cup down. "You're going to be paired up soon, wherever you like it or not. You don't really have a choice. I guess the only other option is to start a revolution."

Jean had prononced that last sentence with a shrug, like a joke.

It suddenly didn't look like a bad idea, though.
