Summary: He swallowed the last of his coffee and let the cup rest on stool as he got up. He took a step forward and started to walk away from his home, aiming to reach further away than the boundaries winter had set for him.
Lancelot sat on a stool in front of a small wooden house. The sun was rising in the horizon as he sipped his steaming hot coffee. He wore simple clothes made of wool and discoloured by age. He was glad for the company of the sun on that morning. The winter had been long and the nights endless, but spring had finally arrived, allowing him outside of his shelter earlier in the mornings. Soon he would be able to spend all of his days in the forest, foraging and getting ready for the following winter. He would also be able to get lost on paths he knew so well and yet were always unknown by the diversity of life that developed around them.
He swallowed the last of his coffee and let the cup rest on stool as he got up. He took a step forward and started to walk away from his home, aiming to reach further away than the boundaries winter had set for him. As his feet carried him further and further away he felt his mind empty of the nightmare of the dark and cold. He could breath again and forget the past. The longer days would bring an incessant flow of activity that would exhaust his body and mind and he wouldn't have time to dwell on the past, the arrogant man he had been then, and all the faults and wrongdoings he had committed. He could simply live during the day and collapse at night on his bed knowing he hadn't disturbed, killed, or threatened any life.
As he reached the edge of his winter living quarter, he started to notice more things around him. Scenery he had forgotten in the abyss of winter were suddenly coming back to his memories and he felt a small smile rise on his lips.
A little while later, he saw a pile of twigs and fallen branches at the feet of a big tree. The winter had been harsh on nature too he thought. He automatically bent to collect the twigs, wanting to erase the memories of loss from the tree's surrounding. As he finished he walked back to his cabin and set the twigs and branches against the wall. They formed the echo of the shape of a broom and immediately he set to built a besom. As his fingers slowly worked around the twigs, lacing them together, tightening their grip on a strong branch, he felt happy. He was giving a new chance to dead branches, allowing the memory of loss to be replaced by a new life.
It was midday when he finished his work. He went to his pantry, trying to find the remnants of his reserve of food. There were still some potatoes around and although he had eaten so many during the last month they had started to lose their taste, the sight of them on this day made him hungry. The end of his annual inferno had come, and a new chapter was just starting.
