Summary: They had won this peace and maybe, just maybe the gods were not that cruel after all.

Anna was leaning against the tree trunk, lying in the protective shades the leaves provided. She had her eyes closed, her book long forgotten on the grass next to her. This summer marked the first year she had left New-York to find Agathe. She could still remember the day they had rested under that same tree, memories piercing through the veil of Agathe's defenses. She could still hardly believe how lucky they were this time. Life was simple, peaceful and without the difficulties of their previous incarnations. There was no war raging around them, no deaths in the streets.

She tilted her head back a little to enjoy the few rays of sun that managed to make their way through the foliage. She sighed. Her life had been so different just a year ago, so bland and sheltered. She would have never been able to enjoy the warmth of the sun on her skin. She would have been trapped indoors, staring at a screen or a microscope. She would have been miserable.

Her eyes jerked open as she heard a loud noise resonating from the shed. Her back straightened and in a second she was on her feet. She was running to the shed. A year had been too much, the gods had remembered them and were punishing them for having been able to enjoy a full year of joy. She reached the door of the shed and opened it to find Agathe sitting on the floor, her sculpting instruments in hand.

"Hello lovely," Agathe said as she saw Anna enter, a wide smile spreading across her face.

"What..." Anna started unable to understand that Agathe was safe, untouched and smiling.

"The block fell," she started seeing the worry in Anna's face. "And well... it's heavy," she finished looking sheepishly down at it.

Anna remained silent for an instant. She wanted to yell and tell Agathe how she had thought the worst had happened and how she should never be that careless again, especially in this shed were so many instruments could kill her in a slow agonising death but no words came out. Instead she started to laugh. Nothing had happened and nothing would happen unless she started to look for trouble.

She sat down next to Agathe and kissed her hair. "What are you doing?"

"Just a little engraving," Agathe replied as she leaned into Anna's body. "I need to practice my figures, otherwise I'll never be able to carve Liander's gift."

"Can I stay?"

"Of course." Agathe smiled at her, kissed her lightly on the lips and started to hammer gently at the block of rock.

Anne moved back slightly to let enough space for Agathe to move around. She closed her eyes once more, still protected by the shades, listening to the gently knocking of metal against rock. Everything would be fine this time around. They had won this peace and maybe, just maybe the gods were not that cruel after all.
