"So this is your army," Arthur stated as he gazed upon the large herd enclosed in front of him.
"The best I could find," Kay joked. He threw his cigarette butt onto the ground as he let the last puff of smoke escape from between his lips. "Pretty tasty too," he added.
Arthur laughed. "A self-sustaining army indeed."
"Well they don't eat each other," Kay corrected.
"But still, they can feed you," Arthur pointed out unwilling to lose the argument.
"That they do," Kay confirmed. "And most of the neighbouring villages too."
Arthur nodded silently.
"Let's go inside, I'm hungry." Kay walked towards the small house in the distance.
"I'll be with you in a minute."
"Don't be too late or you'll have nothing left," Kay teased in reply.
Arthur smiled at the figure of his brother. He seemed happy in this place, at home within this empty stretch of land and among his beasts. It had taken a long time for Arthur to locate him. He had expected to find him in the army or maybe the police but never on farm. He turned his attention back to the cattle. They were strong and impressive beast, obviously well fed and well catered for. They almost did look like an army of sort in the fading light, their muscles exacerbated by the long shadows of the fading light. He saluted them as he had done long ago to his own army and walked away to join his brother for a feast.
After their meal they had gone to sit on the porch of Kay's house. The older man was once more smoking a cigarette while Arthur was clutching a warm mug of coffee in his hand, the steam blurring his line of sight.
"What made you decide on this life," Arthur finally asked.
Kay remained silent for a long moment. Arthur almost thought he wasn't going to answer when he finally said "I wanted peace... and solitude," he added after a pause. "And I still needed to make a living. I figured I could handle cattle after your army," he joked.
Arthur took a sip of coffee. He could understand this need for peace and solitude, for thoughts to run freely and undisturbed about simple matter of life. There was a strong appeal in this life but he knew he could never be content as Kay was. Peace and solitude would only open the gate of memories and regret for him and he knew he wasn't ready to face his past yet.
"You could be my apprentice," Kay commented. "My turn to boss you around."
Arthur laugh feeling the tension lifted from his body as he did so. "You wish." As his brother gently teased him, he forgot about his life as a king and only remembered the gentle banter of his childhood and the freedom of the wild places of their homeland.
