Summary: Kay sat on the step of his porch and pulled a cigarette out of his jeans pocket.
Kay sat on the step of his porch and pulled a cigarette out of his jeans pocket. He placed it in his mouth and carefully lit it. For a brief instant the glare of the match was the only human light in sight. He held the cigarette in front of his eyes watching it burned. He liked the fire it contained. He coud put it out in so many ways and yet could also ignite it and let it burn. He inhaled the poisonous smoke and closed his eyes as he breathed out.
"Still a smoker."
Kay opened his eyes slowly. Gwen stood in front of him wrapped in her expensive coat. "And still don't care about your opinion," he replied smiling. "What owes me the pleasure of your visit?"
"I was in the neighbourhoud," she teased.
He laughed and gently tapped on the step beside him. "Unless you don't want to spoil your lovely coat," he added.
She went to sit beside him without a word and for a few minutes they remained silent. Kay finished his cigarette and stared into the distance to the fields he would need to plough the following day.
"I miss him," Gwen finally said.
Kay nodded. "I know."
"Why can't I find him?"
Kay turned to look at her. Her eyes glistened under the moon's ethereal light. "I don't know." He looked at her unable to find words to say. He had never been good with women and Gwen was no exception. He laid a hand on her shoulder hoping to bring some comfort. She took it as an invitation and leaned into his body.
"We're a strange pair," she commented softly.
"We are," Kay confirmed. "The beauty and the beast." She chuckle at his words. He felt the spasm of her body against his and pushed her gently away. He wasn't immune to feminine charms even when they came form unattainable women.
"I brought you this," Gwen said as she got a small packet out of her coat's inside pocket.
"What's inside," he asked as he took hold of the packet.
"A gift."
He opened it carefully and peered inside. A sweet smell invaded his nostrils and he jerked back in protest. "What's this," he sneered.
Gwen laughed. "I thought you could use a little feminine touch to your environment."
Kay poked inside of the packet. "What am I supposed to do with that," he asked as he took hold of a piece of dry wood. "I'm sure it's not even good enough as kindling."
Gwen laughed again before kissing his cheek. "That," she pointed to the packet "is a potpourri. It's meant to embellish and perfume your home." She made a show of inhaling the sweet scents. "And it reminded of me of us all, a strange mixture that somehow worked."
Kay stared at her for a brief moment as her gaze disappeared into the past. He didn't know what to do to bring her out of it but before he could do anything, she was back into the present a smile on her lips.
"Yeah, as if I'm ever going to display a potpourri in my home," he grunted happy that she had come back to him.
"You will," she teased.
"I like the smell of my cigarette better," he joked as he got another cigarette out.
She punched him in the arm laughing before resting her head on his shoulder and silently swathing the shaded world around them as he smoked away the time.
