Summary: Pearl extended her arm and grabbed Miranda’s hand and held on tight to it. “Wait,” she yelled hoping the words would reach her friend over the cacophony of the crowd
Pearl extended her arm and grabbed Miranda’s hand and held on tight to it. “Wait,” she yelled hoping the words would reach her friend over the cacophony of the crowd but the other girl continued onwards without stopping. Pearl wondered how she was able to navigate such a mass of bodies so easily. She pulled on her friend’s hand and only then did she stop.
“You’re alright?”
Pearl shook her head. “There’re too many people.”
“Plan B it is,” Miranda replied enthusiastically. “Can you bear with the crowd for another fifteen minutes?”
“Where are we going?” She didn’t want to bear with the crowds for another minute. She wanted to go back to Jack’s apartment and enjoy the security of Miranda’s room far above the madness of the streets.
“Up,” Miranda grinned.
“Miranda…” Pearl tried to complain but her friend ignored her and went on through the crowd like an arrow through a forest. Pearl followed obediently focusing on her friend’s hand in hers and trying not the feel the other bodies pressing against her. She needed out of this place. She wanted to go back to the forest where she belonged and where there was ample space to roam and be free.
Miranda took a sharp left into a side street and all of the sudden they were alone.
“I told you it wouldn’t be long.” Pearl felt Miranda’s hand leave her. She wanted to take it back but was afraid she would appear too childish, too afraid of everything. “We only have a ten minutes’ walk to complete and we’ll be up a hill.”
“Will there be people again?”
“Not many. It’s a great spot for tonight’s fireworks but it’s at the edge of town…” Miranda’s voice trailed off on those last words. “Is that okay,” she asked, concern suddenly painted all over her face.
Pearl opened her mouth but no words came out. She had thought a lot about the woods and the home she had left since she had integrated the city but somehow it had always felt far away. The metal, bricks and glass of building making it impossible to conceive of a world made of luxuriant greens and vast open lands.
“It’s okay I think,” she finally replied tentatively.
“You’re sure?”
“Yeah,” Pearl confirmed as she forced a small smile on her lips. “It’s okay.”
Miranda slid her hands in Pearl and gently squeezed it before leading the way out of town. They zigzagged through the streets for another half hour before emerging on top of a hill at the end of a street. To Pearl’s surprise there were no barriers or sign indicating the edge of town. The last house was simply built there and after that the land was left on its own for a few miles before the forest started. Night had fallen and she couldn’t see between the trees.
“We’re just on time,” Miranda said as she looked over the city. “Come here.” She pulled Pearl to her. Pearl forced her gaze away from the trees. In front of her lay the sprawling mass in which she had lived in for a few weeks. She couldn’t see the streets overshadowed by a display of buildings competing for the sky. It was like a forest that had burned all charred and dead. She felt a wave of sadness overcome her.
“Isn’t it beautiful,” Miranda said.
“It’s…” Pearl couldn’t find the words to go on. She couldn’t see where the beauty lay in those horrible straight mass. There was no life. Before she could try to articulate her thoughts an explosion of colours burst into the sky. She shrank back and hit Miranda’s shoulder. Miranda laughed and held her back.
“Fireworks,” she whispered in her ear.
Pearl took a step forward, her eyes wide with wonder as the explosions went on and on, bursting into an array of colours, sounds and forms.
“It’s… beautiful,” she murmured at the spectacle.
