They stared at the girl long after all their other passengers had unboarded and left. They stared at the teenager who seemed so small and pale in the large airplane seat. They looked at her face, now calm but still with the streaks of tears that had run down it, and wondered what could have brought her to this.

Each felt to blame. They should have noticed her. They should have noticed she needed help, but among the bustle of the crowd flying to Paris, she had somehow drifted amongst them, unnoticed, unseen, but with her heart clearly breaking. They should have helped her. They didn't know what they could have done, but somehow, some way, they should have helped her. Now no one could.

"The authorities will be here soon."

"Leave her 'til then. We don't want to mess up the scene."

"How did this happen, Captain?"

"You tell me. I've been in the cockpit."

"This isn't going to look good for any of us or for the company."

"Who cares?! There's a girl dead! The company can bite my butt for all I care right now!"

"This is going to be all over the news."

"It'll be an international scene."

"It is an international scene!"

"Poor girl! She flew to the City of Love and never got to see it."

"Once you've seen one, you've seen them all."

"But why come all this way just to die?"

"You think she planned it?"

"She must have. She had the pills."

"I wonder where's she from?"

"One of those rare, little places I've never heard of. Some town in Massachusetts called Capeside."

"How do you know?"

"I looked at her passport."

"I told you not to touch anything."

"That was before, when we first found her, Captain. I wanted to know who she is."

"She's no one now."

"She was a young woman on the run who chose our airplane to kill herself on. We should've seen it coming!"

"How? She barely spoke a word the whole flight."

"Did you see her name?"

"Andrea McPhee."

"All right. Move aside. We're here. Let us do our job."

The shocked crew moved just enough to the left that the police officers could reach the corpse. Two of them, a man and a woman, approached with caution. "*She's so young.*"

"*The age of my daughter.*"

"*She's holding something. What's that in her hand, Jean Paul?*"

"*A note.*" He took the slip of paper from the dead girl's right hand and carefully smoothed it out with his own gloved hands.

"*Is it a suicide letter?*"

"*Kind of. It's a lead, at least.*"

"*What does it say?*"

Jean Paul looked up into his partner's eyes. "I'm sorry, Pacey."

"*He must've been one Hell of a guy.*"

"*Hell of is more like it. Whoever this Pacey is, he let her die. I would not spit on him.*"

"*The States' officers will take care of him.*"

And a world away, another heart broke. Pacey sat down hard, one hand clutching his chest. He looked to the sky that was suddenly gray, clouds drawing heavy with rain. He remembered his grandmother telling him when he was a small boy that raindrops were the tears of the Angels in Heaven, and he knew in that moment. He knew Andie had not made it to Paris. He knew he'd never get another chance to see her again, and he'd never have the opportunity to say, "I'm sorry," and mean it with all his heart. He hung his head and cried.

The End
