The dim light of Jack's desk lamp was fading, the yellow circle of clarity slowly bleeping out of existence but Jack didn't notice. He had his back turned on it, his gaze lost in the streets below. The night was cloudy and dark and he couldn't see anything in the distance but below his window, dots of light illuminated the comings and goings of night citizen and he could just about make their form from his high vantage point. He always enjoyed creating patterns out of the dots they form but this evening he wasn't in the mood. A storm was brewing over the city and he wanted it to be over. If only he could get some clear sky for a day or two, he was sure he could think a bit more clearly.

'Jack?'

'It's late Mike. Whatever it is, it can wait until the morning.'

'I just want to talk... about... you know.' Jack could picture his assistant's fingers twisting the bottom of his shirt. He turned around slowly, trying not to let the anger of the afternoon invade him. It was not Mike's fault if everything was going the wrong way.

'What do you want me to say?'

'Are you really not going to tell her anything?'

Jack looked at his friend for a long time. He had been pondering this question for twenty years now and had made his decision long ago. He would tell her the truth when she would be ready. She was not. But could she ever be? He had lied to her for so long, he wasn't sure anymore if he could recognise the time when she could understand his words and why he had remained silent all those years.

'She's not ready,' he simply replied.

'But Jack... It's getting so close now and she's... involved.'

Jack laughed. 'Involved?' It was such an understatement. 'Is that the best you can say? Involved?' He laughed again. The desk lamp shone brightly for a brief second before turning dark. The men where left in darkness. The detective stopped laughing. He took a step forward and slump in his chair. 'She's at the centre of it all,' he whispered. 'But I promised to protect her. So you see, I can't tell her anything.'

He fumbled blindly into the lower drawer and got out a new light bulb. He replaced the broken one slowly, the twisting rusting sound of the lamp being the only noise in the room for a few minutes. The light came back steady and strong.

'Leave me alone now.' Jack picked up a pen. 'I have to figure a way to keep her safe for a while longer.'

'I'll help.' Jack raised his head. His assistant has his hands out of his pockets and was extending a cigarette to him. He accepted it. 'Any ideas,' he asked as Mike lit his own cigarette.
