Summary: Jack pressed a kiss to Miranda’s forehead. ‘There you are, all tucked in and safe.’

Jack pressed a kiss to Miranda’s forehead. ‘There you are, all tucked in and safe.’

‘You promise,’ asked the little girl uncertainly.

‘Of course I am. I’m a detective remember? I know about those things.’

‘No monster?’

‘No monster. I’ve made sure of it.’ He smiled kindly at her.

‘Okay.’ Miranda finally said after consideration. ‘But can you stay for a little while,’ she added timidly.

Jack nodded. ‘Of course I can. I’ll just go sit over there.’ He pointed to the chair by the desk on the opposite side of the room. ‘You just close your eyes and fall asleep.’

Miranda agreed, her eyelids closing instantly.

‘Good girl.’ Jack rose from the side of the bed and went to take a seat on the chair. He looked at Miranda quickly falling asleep. It was strange to have a child in the house. He wasn’t used to her innocent eyes looking up to him for safety. It was as if her world depending on him and he felt responsible. He hadn’t even meant to take her in but somehow he was going to be her legal guardian from now on. He better get used to it.

He saw her chest rise slower and slower until it settled on a steady rhythm. He knew then that she was asleep but he didn’t want to leave. There was a stillness to the room that was soothing him. He didn’t have to think about the latest cases waiting for him on his desk. In this room he was safe from the world, just as he had promised to Miranda.

Jack woke up with a start as he heard the rustling of sheets. He looked up and realised he had been asleep. In front of him, Miranda was struggling out of the bed.

‘Miranda,’ he asked softly but he got not response. He rose from his seat to get to the little girl and put her back to sleep. She was on her feet and starting to walk to the door when he reached her. He grabbed her gently on the shoulders but again she didn’t seem to register his presence. He knelt down and looked at her and realised she was still asleep. Her eyes were glazed and lost in an infinite point in the distance.

‘Where are you going,’ he enquired softly as Miranda made her way out of the room. He followed her quietly curious to see where she was leading him. She walked along to corridor until she reached Jack’s office. She got in and stopped for an instant before turning to the sofa on the corner. She settled there, curled on herself and closed her eyes once more.

Jack smiled. She had spent the first few days in that exact same position watching him work and refusing to move to any other room. It was where she felt safe. He went back to the bedroom quickly, grabbed the blanket from the bed and brought it back to her.

He then settled at his desk where a pile of work was waiting for him.
