Title: The First Arrow
Fandom: Young Avengers
Words: 576
Warnings: None
Rating: PG
Prompt 429 Eyas
A/N : Pre-comics, starring Kate Bishop. I'm fairly new to the fandom, and all I know about archery come from Hawkeye comics and Arrow episodes, so well, you know, it's probably terrible.
She was mostly there to play the cello, but it turned out the Interlochen National Music Camp had a lot more to offer than music.
"Lock your back muscles... breath sloooowly..."
The arrow left the wire with a sharp sound, flying fast through the air, and missed the target by several inches. Kate lowered the bow and exhale with frustration. She had yet to get an arrow in that target, even at the border. She had known, when she had taken upon archery, that it wouldn't be easy, but it was getting frustrating.
"You're going too fast, Kate", Emily said, a woman in her mid-thirties who looked too posh to be an archer. And yet, she had demonstrated that she was more than efficient with a bow. "You need to relax. Take the time to aim. Take the time to lock your body. It takes time to be able to reach your target with every draw, and even more to do that without thinking."
"I know", the young girl replied, sulking maybe just a little.
"I know that you know", the woman contered. "Maybe you need to let it sink for a little while. Don't you have cello lessons to attent?"
A quick look at her watch, and Kate was putting the bow and arrows back with the rest of the equipement, and running toward her cello hour.
The next morning, she was determined to put at least one arrow into the big rounded target, even if she had to prepare herself to that shot for half an hour.
Stay calm, relax, she kept repeating to herself like a mantra all the way to the shooting range.
"Hello, Kate", Emily waved at her with a bright smile. The youg girl waved back, still drawing long breaths. "How are you today?"
"Fine, I'm fine", she replied, before adding with determination: "today, I'm reaching the target."
"You are, aren't you?", the woman commented, slightly amused. "Let's take the bow, then."
The three first arrows hadn't been convincing, so far, but Kate didn't give up. Today, she was reaching the target, no matter what. Kate took another arrow from the quiver and put it on the bow. She took a deep breath and raised the weapon.
She drew the wire slowly, until it was tensed enough.
Another deep breath.
She kept her focus on the target, letting everything around her fade away. Time it self seemed to slow down while she eyed that target with an intensity that would have burned it on spot if she had that kind of power.
Another breath, slower than the previous one.
She felt her back muscles tightening one by one, as if she was pushing pieces together to solve a mechanical puzzle. Once every single one was in the right place, tensed just the right amount, she locked everything tightly, not allowing a single piece to move even by a hair.
Inhale.
Exhale.
She let her hand relax and slowly release the wire.
The arrow went flying fast toward the target while the young girl kept the bow up, taking her time to disengage her body from the effort.
With a sharp sound that barely reached her, the arrow got stuck in the target. Closer to the border than the center, true, but she had reached it. She had done it.
"Great job, Kate!", Emily said happily. The young girl lowered the bow, smiling at herself. She could get good at it.
