The burned shape was lying on the examination table, oddly flat against the metallic surface. The skin was of a rich, golden brown, blackened only on a few parts. No blatant evidence of trauma, though it was difficut to say with any certainty given the roasted coloration of the whole body. Any small opening in the flesh would be nearly invisible for the same reasons. It didn't look like a victim's body, and yet it was.
"What can you tell me about him ?", Beverley asked, averting her eyes from the body to find the ME's face. It held a look of apologetic amusement that told the detective she was about to hear something she would rather not.
"I can give you a motive for the unsub", Deana replied, her fingers tapping her clipboard in rythm, "but prepare yourself: it's pretty creepy."
Beverley sighed. She knew it.
"When isn't it, in this job?", she asked, defeated, and brassed herself for the upcoming explanation.
"Have you ever tried to grill a whole chicken?", Deana asked then. The detective raised an eyebrow, not sure of how pertinent that question was in her investigation.
"No, I haven't. I can't even imagine how it is possible", she responded hesitantly.
"Well, you never put an entire chicken on a grill. You have to spatchcock it first."
Beverley looked at the ME with blank eyes. She was no worse cook than most people, but that sounded way out of her kitchen league. Deana smiled knowingly, and went on.
"You remove the backbone, and sometimes the sternum of the bird, so that it flattens and can cook evenly on a grill."
Beverley looked down at the body and winced. "I fear I understand where you're going."
"The spine, the ribs and the hipbones were removed from the body. Given the coloration of the body, I can't rule out the possibility that it wasn't on its way to be completely burned, but rather was being grilled, maybe for consumption purpose."
Beverley closed her eyes and sighed again, feeing the urge to bang her head against the closest wall. "You mean the unsub might be a cannibal."
"Can't rule out the possibility." Deana gave her an apologetic smile. Cases like this tended to pile up this two last years, and it was getting on everyone's nerves in the service. Strange crimes, strange bodies. It was like the town was going crazy.
"That's out of my league", the detective said at last, openening her eyes again. "We're gonna need some help. I hope the BAU will have a team available."
They stayed silent for a few seconds, contemplating the mess that their job had become lately. If Deana wasn't against a little diversity in her subjects, Beverley was thinking about moving to another city. Or maybe change job altogether.
" I don't even see the point", Beverley said suddenly. "A human body is quite flat already, why take all those bones away?"
Deana raised her shoulders. "Don't ask me. I'm not privvy to man-eating habits, you know."
